Game Summary
From the opening faceoff, both teams played fast-paced, hard-hitting playoff hockey. The first dangerous moment came during a Munich power play (3rd minute). The Red Bulls applied pressure and created good chances—but the goal came shortly after Ingolstadt’s penalty expired: After Antoine Bibeau managed to stop Abbott Girduckis’ shot, Matthew Boucher scored on the rebound to make it 0-1 (6th minute). It remained a fast-paced game with plenty of offensive action, but for a long time without any further clear scoring chances. Shortly before the end of the period, Patrick Hager had the equalizer on his stick, but ERC goalie Devin Williams was there to make the save (18th). Even on the power play, the 1-1 equalizer didn’t come. So the teams headed into the locker room with Ingolstadt holding a narrow lead.
In the second period, Ingolstadt got off to the better start: First, Riley Barber made it 0-2 with a power-play goal (22nd), before Peter Abbandonato completed the one-two punch with the 0-3 (23rd). Shortly after a good chance by Maximilian Kastner for Munich’s first goal (25th), Kenny Agostino even added the 0-4 (26th). The visitors were clinical during this phase, while the Red Bulls had to regroup—and then showed a response: McKenna deflected the puck beautifully to make it 1-4 (29th). The four-time German champions now played with more intensity and were rewarded shortly before the second intermission. Ferguson narrowed the gap to 2-4 with a lot of effort (40th).
Munich came out of the locker room with momentum in the final period. A turnover in the offensive zone then allowed the Panthers to launch a counterattack, which Alex Breton finished to make it 2-5 (46th). The Red Bulls tried hard afterward but initially couldn’t find a way to build pressure. With six minutes left in the period, coach Oliver David pulled the goalie during a power play. With the sixth skater on the ice, Tobias Rieder scored to make it 3-5 (56th). Just seconds later, Johannes Krauß restored the previous lead with the 3-6 (56th)—seemingly sealing the victory for the visitors. However, things got really exciting again, as Ferguson (59th) and Pokka (60th)—each with an extra attacker—brought the Red Bulls back to 5-6. Just seconds before the final buzzer, Pokka’s shot missed overtime by mere centimeters.
