PENNY DEL: Rule Changes for the 2026–27 Season
Here’s an overview of all the changes for the new season, before the action resumes with the game between the Eisbären Berlin and the Straubing Tigers on Thursday (7:30 p.m.).
New Rules
6.1 - Captains and Assistant Captains: A team may have either one captain and two assistant captains or no captain and three assistant captains.
33.2 - Goal Scorers on a Tactical Goal: If an attacking player is about to reach a loose puck and is prevented from shooting at an empty net by a foul, resulting in a goal being awarded, the goal is credited to the fouled player.
60.1 - High-Sticking: The definition of “high-sticking” has been clarified. A high-sticking penalty may only be assessed if the opponent’s shoulder is at hip level or higher.
76. - Faceoff: If a violation occurs during a faceoff, the center of the offending team is replaced. This does not apply to a faceoff following an icing.
79.1 - Hand Pass: If the on-ice officials determine that the puck was deflected by a player’s hand and the team did not gain an advantage from it, this does not constitute a violation of this rule.
83.1 – Offside: An attacking player who enters the attacking zone ahead of the puck must control the puck with his stick to avoid being offside.
New Procedures and Rule Interpretations
Icing: In the event of an icing, the front linesman will raise his arm immediately after the whistle. This clearly signals that the whistle was blown due to an icing. This signal corresponds to the previous delayed icing or the signal that was previously given by the rear linesman when the icing was initiated.
After Goals: After a goal (when the puck has completely crossed the goal line), the referee should no longer blow the whistle immediately after making the goal signal (pointing to the goal). A whistle should only be blown if play continues after the goal in a manner that goes unnoticed by the teams. The rationale behind this change is that numerous goal situations, including those involving ongoing play, can now be reviewed via video review. A whistle in such situations can lead to confusion and make it more difficult to reach the correct decision.
