Which team starts the playoffs with a home game?
The team that finished the DEL regular season in a higher position in the standings has home-ice advantage. This club kicks off the playoff round with the first game in front of its home crowd. After that, the venues alternate.
Who qualifies for the playoffs?
Teams in the top 10 of the standings after the 52 games of the DEL regular season have qualified for the playoffs. The field is then divided into two groups. The top six teams automatically qualify for the playoff quarterfinals. Teams ranked seventh through tenth compete in the first playoff round. The seventh-place team plays the tenth-place team for a spot in the quarterfinals—eighth place faces ninth place. The final two quarterfinalists are determined in a best-of-three series, where two wins are required to advance to the next round. EHC Red Bull Munich had qualified for the quarterfinals for the twelfth consecutive time.
How does the playoff format work?
The playoff format also changes with the start of the playoffs. The first playoff round is a best-of-three series (two wins to advance), while the quarterfinals and beyond are best-of-seven series (four wins required). Additionally, in the event of a tie after 60 minutes, there is no longer a five-minute overtime period followed by a shootout. Instead, play continues five-on-five. In additional “periods” of 20 minutes each, play continues until one team scores and thus wins. As a result, the length of a playoff game can vary significantly. On March 22, 2008, the third quarterfinal matchup between the Kölner Haie and the Adler Mannheim, lasting 168 minutes and 16 seconds across a total of nine periods, became the longest game in DEL history to date. Other notable features: The mandatory “handshake” and the joint celebration with the fans do not take place after individual games, but only upon the conclusion of the respective playoff series.
