Game Summary
Munich initially carved out a slight advantage until a penalty disrupted the flow of the game. Although Lausanne failed to generate any notable scoring chances during the power play, the Swiss team subsequently became more determined: Antoine Bibeau made a strong save to deny Austin Czernak’s first big chance (7th minute), but the Canadian was beaten for the first time on Antti Suomela’s wrist shot (9th minute). Shortly afterward, Fabian Heldner extended the lead to 2–0 (11th minute). The Red Bulls, however, had the perfect response to the two-goal burst: Eisenschmid cut the lead to 1–2 just two minutes later on a rebound. Munich now took control and created further chances to tie the game, but they were unable to do so before the first intermission.
After the break, the Red Bulls’ penalty kill units were called upon once again, and Lausanne was once more kept at bay without any major scoring chances. The four-time German champions continued to allow few chances. Bibeau had to make saves far less frequently than Kevin Pasche: The Swiss goaltender prevented the equalizer against Yasin Ehliz (23rd minute) and Veit Oswald (30th minute), among others. Munich remained in control until the closing stages of the second period. In the final minutes, Lausanne also had some good scoring chances, but the teams headed into the locker rooms without any further goals.
The final period developed into an open battle. The alert defensive lines didn’t allow any clear-cut scoring chances until the 49th minute. Then Jeremy McKenna fought hard to win the puck and passed it across to Kastner, who fired a shot on goal to tie the game at 2–2. The game then intensified, with both teams incurring penalties—and one of them put the Red Bulls on the path to victory: On the power play, Taro Hirose found Rieder at the far post, who tapped it in to make it 3–2 (59th minute). Shortly thereafter, Ferguson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal to make it 4–2 while his team was shorthanded (60th minute).
