DEB Team: Phillip Sinn Talks About Preparations for the Ice Hockey Championship
For now, a summer break and some rest are out of the question for Sinn. The 22-year-old is currently working hard to earn a spot on the roster for the upcoming Ice Hockey World Championship in Switzerland. About a year ago, Sinn made his debut in a DEB jersey against Austria, and he scored his first goal against Latvia at the Deutschland Cup in November. Now Sinn is eager for more.
“Going to the World Championship would definitely be a dream come true. I can still remember: When I watched a World Championship for the first time, I was five or six years old. I would be absolutely thrilled,” said the Munich-based defenseman. However, a little patience is still required: Next week, national team coach Harold Kreis will officially announce his final roster for the tournament in Zurich and Fribourg (May 15–31).
Between Training and Time with the Family
Since Wednesday, Sinn has been in Mannheim with the DEB team for the final phase of World Championship preparations. A rigorous schedule has been in place there over the past few days. After breakfast and a warm-up consisting of various running drills, the entire team took to the ice in the morning. The focus was on passing and shooting drills, and the special teams also worked on their plays. “Then there was a cool-down, after which we headed back to the hotel. The afternoon was free, though sometimes we did some video analysis,” reports our defenseman.

Sinn, Wagner und Kastner sind derzeit mit dem DEB-Team unterwegs
Sinn, who shares a room with Maxi Kastner, used the time to pay a visit to his parents, who live in Mannheim, among other things. A trip to the barber was also on the agenda. “My long hair has gotten a little too short,” he laughs. Whether this will become his World Championship hairstyle remains to be seen.
Munich Duo Side by Side on the DEB Team
In any case, Sinn has recently made a strong case for himself. In the past two exhibition games against Austria, the youngster played defense alongside his Munich teammate Fabio Wagner. Germany won 4-3 and 5-2, with both players performing strongly. It’s quite possible that our duo will play together at the World Championship as well—after all, they’re familiar with each other’s game.
But Sinn also gets along well with the players from other clubs. “The level of play is extremely high, and it’s just a ton of fun,” he enthuses. “It’s nice to get to know some of the guys better—the ones you’ve played against during the season and battled intensely with.”

Highlight Match Against the Olympic Champions
A real highlight awaits Sinn on Sunday. In the final warm-up match before the World Championship, Germany will face the U.S. at 5:00 p.m.—of all places, at the SAP Arena in his hometown of Mannheim. “I’m really looking forward to the game; my family will be there,” says Sinn, looking ahead to the upcoming matchup against the reigning Olympic and World Champions.
And our number 43 is especially motivated for another reason: “When you play against so many top players, you see where you stand as a team and personally.” After all, the U.S. lineup features numerous NHL pros. “I expect a very fast-paced game and a technically very strong team,” Sinn predicts.
If everything goes according to plan, he would secure a World Championship berth right here at home. “I think we’ll find out right after the game whether we’re in.” What a special story that would be!
