Game summary
The Sharks won the opening face-off, but the Red Bulls controlled the early stages of the game. Cologne became more active from the sixth minute onwards and created their first chances, which Mathias Niederberger saved with some acrobatic saves. Munich then began to pose a greater threat in front of KEC goalie Tobias Ancicka, with Markus Eisenschmid hitting the crossbar in the ninth minute. However, this remained the best attempt in the opening period. The first period ended goalless.
The game became more intense in the second period, but neither team was able to capitalize on their power play opportunities. The first goal finally came in the 30th minute: Cologne had just returned to full strength when Krening cleverly deflected a shot from Ville Pokka into the Haie goal to make it 1-0 for Munich. Shortly thereafter, the Finnish newcomer, who had only joined the team on Thursday, recorded his second assist. This time, Fontaine benefited from Pokka's brilliant setup at the far post and made it 2-0 (35th minute). Just one minute later, Cologne struck back. Brady Austin scored to make it 1-2. This score remained unchanged until the intermission buzzer.
The Red Bulls started the final period quickly, directly, and successfully. First, Rieder increased the lead to 3-1 from close range (43rd minute), then Oswald immediately made it 4-1 (45th minute). Munich defended with concentration, and Cologne had few chances. Until the 54th minute, that is. Nate Schnarr scored on a power play to make it 2-4 for the Sharks. With 4:20 minutes remaining, the KEC pulled their goalie and pushed for the tying goal. But Munich's defense held on to secure a deserved 4-2 away win in their DEL opener.
