Match report
Bremerhaven had a power play early in the game, but the Red Bulls defended compactly. Goaltender Antoine Bibeau rarely had to intervene, as did his counterpart Leon Hungerecker. Munich increased the tempo midway through the period. The reward came promptly: Murphy hammered a slap shot under the crossbar to make it 1-0 (9th minute). However, the lead did not last long, as Bennet Roßmy equalized just three minutes later (12th minute). After that, the defensive lines dominated the game again, with chances few and far between. The score was 1-1 going into the first break.
The Red Bulls got off to a perfect start in the second period: on the power play, Taro Hirose shot the puck from the blue line towards the goal, Eisenschmid deflected it and it was 2-1 (22nd minute). The four-time German champions kept up the pace and pushed for another goal, but it was the other side that scored. Akito Hirose made it 2-2 (30th) during a Penguins power play. An open exchange of blows ensued, with Munich having the better chances. Murphy took advantage of one of them, scoring shortly before the second intermission to make it 3-2 (39th).
The final period got off to a furious start: first, Ziga Jeglic scored the visitors' third equalizer of the evening (41st), before Eisenschmid scored Munich's fourth goal on a power play shortly afterwards, also completing his brace (44th). Because the Red Bulls defended consistently and survived two shorthanded situations, the narrow lead held until the final stages. As the visitors pushed for the equalizer with an extra attacker, Hager sealed the deal with his empty-net goal to make it 5-3 (60th minute). It was the Munich captain's 600th point in the PENNY DEL. Seven seconds later, Hager added another goal into the empty net to make it 6-3.
