Game summary
In the first period, fans witnessed a high-quality duel with many highlights. Thomas Schemitsch provided the first highlight, putting Augsburg ahead in the second minute (2nd). The Red Bulls then pushed hard for a quick equalizer and created numerous chances. Maximilian Kastner had the first, but the crossbar saved Michael Garteig (4th minute). Shortly afterwards, the Panther goalkeeper was beaten for the first time when Ehliz calmly slotted home to make it 1-1 on the power play (5th minute). The pace and intensity remained high after that. The longer the period went on, the more dominant Munich became. In the 15th minute, the pressure became too much for the Panthers when Hager scored to make it 2-1 after some impressive build-up play from Ryan Murphy (15th minute). Shortly afterwards, McKenna added a third goal with a deflection (18th minute). The teams went into the first break with a 3-1 lead.
The four-time German champions continued to set the tone in the middle period, but also had to survive a critical situation: after two fouls within 13 seconds, the visitors found themselves two men down (25th). Augsburg had a great opportunity to score the tying goal, but the Red Bulls survived the situation – thanks in part to defender Pokka, who cleared the puck off his own line (26th). Four minutes later, the Finn shone at the other end with a shot into the corner to make it 4-1 for Munich (30th minute). Daubner added a fifth goal before the second intermission with his first of the season (36th minute).
The Red Bulls didn't let up in the final period either. Rieder scored the 6-1 goal (47th) on his comeback from injury – the decisive goal, but by no means the final score. Cody Kunyk (49th) and Joseph Cramarossa on the power play (55th) scored for the AEV, with Krening's seventh goal for Munich (51st) in between. McKenna put the finishing touches on a clear-cut derby with his second goal of the evening to make it 8-3 (60th).
