Course of the game
At the beginning of the ice hockey evening, Patrick Hager was the center of attention: The Munich captain was honored for his 1000th DEL game. Berlin then got off to the slightly better start. Frederik Tiffels had the first top chance, but Mathias Niederberger reacted strongly (2nd). After five minutes, the Red Bulls got into the game better. The duel was now even. As the defensive lines defended consistently, shots like the one by Munich striker Adam Brooks in the 18th minute were few and far between. The first period ended goalless.
Even after the break, Berlin were initially the more active team. Ty Ronning had the empty goal in front of him in the 25th minute, but was stopped at the last moment. Shortly afterwards, the Eisbären striker did better and put the visitors 1:0 ahead (27'). The Red Bulls then stepped up a gear - and were rewarded in the 32nd minute: Yasin Ehliz took a shot, Jake Hildebrand let it bounce and Rieder dusted it off to make it 1:1. An open exchange of blows ensued with top chances on both sides: Niederberger made a spectacular save to prevent Ronning's second goal (34'), Hildebrand shone against Ville Pokka (36'). Two minutes later, the Capitals' goalie was beaten when Rieder poked the puck over the line to make it 2:1. The visitors had the last word in the middle period, however, when Manuel Wiederer equalized the score at 2:2 shortly before the second break (40').
The final period continued in spectacular fashion. Rieder appeared free in front of goal after just a few seconds, but missed just wide. Munich now pressed for the lead - and struck again in overtime through DeSousa (45'). The Red Bulls kept the pressure on and had several chances to score a fourth goal, but Hildebrand kept the visitors in the game. The Polar Bears' offense hardly made any headway, not even in the final phase with a sixth outfield player. The result was a 3:2 victory for Munich.
