Match Summary
After a cautious start by both teams, Hager put the Red Bulls ahead with a spectacular solo effort (5th minute). For the captain, it was his 26th playoff goal in a Munich jersey in the German Ice Hockey League—making him the Red Bulls’ all-time leading playoff goal-scorer. The 1-0 lead sparked a period of sustained pressure with several good chances before the visitors posed their first real threat on a power play (12th minute). The four-time German champions also scored the second goal: Ehliz extended the lead to 2-0 on the power play following a strong assist from Taro Hirose (17th minute). The teams headed into the locker room with that score.
The second period saw a lively back-and-forth. Ingolstadt came out of the locker room stronger and cut the lead through Philipp Krauß (23rd). Shortly after, Oswald hit the post at the other end (24th), and Ville Pokka also narrowly missed making it 3-1 with a direct shot (27th). Instead, Peter Abbandonato tied the game (29th). The Red Bulls, however, had the perfect response and retook the lead just 28 seconds later through Oswald (30th minute). The game settled down somewhat afterward, before Riley Barber tied it up at 3-3 on a power play (36th minute). Munich struck back quickly, though: Rieder gave them a 4-3 lead (38th minute) after 40 minutes.
The Red Bulls started the third period focused. The defense allowed little, and on offense, Smits scored the 5-3 goal with a one-timer (46th minute). For the 18-year-old Latvian, it was his first goal in the DEL. This was followed by the visitors’ first major offensive push with several good scoring chances, but Antoine Bibeau stood in the way of the tying goal. Munich remained dangerous on offense as well, but Rieder missed the net with a clear shot in front of Williams (53rd). The two-goal lead held until the final minutes. With five and a half minutes left on the clock, the Panthers’ goalie left the ice for the first time to make way for an extra attacker. The visitors applied pressure, but Munich held firm. With 53 seconds remaining, Ferguson sealed the deal with an empty-net goal to make the final score 6-3.
