Gameplay
Munich immediately went forward, Wolfsburg was challenged defensively. The visitors defended compactly in front of their own goal, but once they gave the Red Bulls too much space: Ehliz played Daubner free and the defender aimed very accurately - 1:0 for the leaders (7.). The Grizzlys became really dangerous for the first time in the eighth minute: Darren Archibald sprinted towards Mathias Niederberger's goal, but the Munich keeper reacted strongly. The duel became more even after that, but no further goals were scored before the first intermission.
High-class ice hockey after the change of ends - and Don Jackson's team again with the better start: DeSousa made it 2:0 after a fine individual action (21.). The Red Bulls were extremely eager to play, but Wolfsburg came back with the follow-up goal by Dustin Jeffrey (25.). Just one minute later, Ehliz was on the spot: The in-form attacker finished off a fantastic combination in overtime to make it 3:1 (26). Both teams then had top chances, one of which was used by Jeffrey for the Grizzlys (40.).
High tempo also in the last third. Niederberger moved into the center of attention - and prevented the equalizer several times. Since Grizzlys keeper Dustin Strahlmeier also made a strong save, Munich went into the final minutes with a narrow lead. In this phase, the crossbar saved for the Red Bulls after Laurin Braun's shot (55th). But the decision came in the 58th minute: McKiernan redeemed the league leaders with his empty-net goal for the 4:2 final score.
