Game Summary
The semifinal matchup between the second-place team from the regular season and the fourth-place team from Munich got off to a spectacular start with good scoring chances for both teams. After Tobias Rieder was stopped by the alert Maximilian Franzreb in the home team’s net (2nd minute), Mannheim scored the first goal: John Gilmour put the team ahead 1-0 in the 5th minute. The Red Bulls were unfazed by this setback and immediately applied intense pressure to even the score. Hirose capped off the effort eight seconds before the end of the period with a technically impressive goal to make it 1-1. With this score after 20 intense minutes, the teams headed into the intermission.
In the second period as well, after a brief settling-in phase, both teams displayed a distinctly aggressive style. But the two best defensive lines from the regular season held firm at first, with both first-period goal scorers each hitting the goal frame once (29th minute). Everything was pointing toward a scoreless period when Heigl fired the puck into the short corner at mid-height for his first playoff goal and to give the Red Bulls a 2-1 lead heading into the break (39th minute).
This lead didn’t last long in the final period: Zachary Solow tied the game at 2-2 from close range following a Mannheim counterattack (42nd minute). The teams then continued to battle it out in a physical match, with Munich becoming increasingly dangerous in front of the net as the game wore on. Yasin Ehliz came closest to scoring, slamming the puck against the crossbar (52nd). However, the score remained 2-2, and the game had to be decided in overtime.
In overtime, the Red Bulls pushed hard for the win, but Franzreb made several sensational saves. On the other end, Munich’s goalie Antoine Bibeau also demonstrated his skills during a Mannheim power play. In the 73rd minute, however, he was powerless to stop Marc Michaelis from deflecting the puck in for the winning goal for the Adler.
