Gameplay
Munich was the visually superior team at the beginning, but the big chances were missing. Wolfsburg defended compactly and then got better into the game with two overtime situations. In the final phase of the first period, both sides had their best chances. First Dustin Jeffrey on a Wolfsburg counterattack (18.), shortly after Ehliz for the Red Bulls (19.). However, there were no goals before the first intermission.
The Grizzlys in the middle period consistent and ice cold. Spencer Machacek (23rd), Trevor Mingoia (29th) and Dustin Jeffrey (34th) ensured a 3:0 lead with their goals. After that, it was an open exchange of blows: The Red Bulls reduced the score on the power play through Ehliz (38th), before Tyler Morley added another for Wolfsburg (39th). However, a Munich player had the last word in the second period: DeSousa reduced the score to 2:4 in the 40th minute.
The Red Bulls put a lot of pressure on the visitors' goal in the final period. Redmond used one of numerous top chances in overtime to make it 3:4 (45th). Munich continued to press forward, but Wolfsburg managed to break free once: Machacek made it 3:5 (50th). The Grizzlys defense around goalkeeper Dustin Strahlmeier then came into focus again, but withstood the Munich assault until the end.
