// DEL - HIGHLIGHTS
Game Summary
How did the highest-scoring series of this year's playoffs so far kick off its sixth game? With a goal—and it went to the aggressive Red Bulls: Hirose capitalized on a misplay by Ingolstadt goalie Brett Brochu to make it 1-0 (4th minute). From there, the two teams engaged in a closely contested battle with few clear-cut chances. One of those chances led to the hosts tying the game on Philipp Krauß’s rebound (13th minute). Four minutes later, Krauß put the ERC ahead 2-1. That was also the score at the intermission.
The Munich team came out of the locker room determined for the second period and struck back after just 41 seconds: Daubner buried a rebound from a sharp angle to make it 2-2 (21st minute). But the Panthers’ response was not long in coming; Morgan Ellis scored from the blue line in the 25th minute. The physically dominant Red Bulls were not fazed by this. First, they tied the game again through Krening (27th), then DeSousa made it 4-3 (32nd) after a perfectly executed counterattack. The teams headed into the second intermission with this score.
Coach Oliver David’s team had the first dangerous offensive play of the final period, after which Ingolstadt pushed for the 4-4 equalizer. In the 48th minute, however, Rieder broke away and capped off his spectacular solo run with the 5-3 goal for Munich. Now the Panthers threw everything forward, but time and again found their match in the Red Bulls’ defense, anchored by the strong goaltender Antoine Bibeau. With five and a half minutes remaining, Ingolstadt pulled the goaltender for the first time in favor of a sixth skater. Smits capitalized on this opportunity with great vision to make it 6-3 (55th). The Schanzer continued to fight against the looming elimination with an empty net—in vain: DeSousa scored his second goal to make it 7-3 (58th) and secured the Red Bulls’ spot in the semifinals.
