DEL preview, match day 27: EHC Red Bull München welcomes the Kölner Haie

Battle for third place: Red Bulls also want to defeat Kölner Haie// DEL - PREVIEWIt's the start of the second half of the season and also the top match on the 27th match day of the PENNY DEL: Red Bull München welcomes the third-placed Kölner Haie to the SAP Garden on Wednesday. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
Only three points separate the two teams. There's a lot at stake, and excitement is guaranteed. And now pay attention: as always during the week, you can take advantage of our after-work offer around the SAP Garden – perfect for ending the day with Red Bulls ice hockey.
A perfect weekend behind us
The Red Bulls have had a truly remarkable weekend: our boys took home six points – three from their home win against ERC Ingolstadt (2-0), who arrived as league leaders, and another three from their clear 5-0 away win in Frankfurt.
Milestone for goalie Bibeau
One person was particularly happy: Antoine Bibeau. Our goalie celebrated his first shutout in the PENNY DEL against Ingolstadt – and because it was so great, he followed it up two days later in Frankfurt, once again not conceding a single goal. In nine appearances for Munich, the Canadian has saved 92.7 percent of the shots on his goal – a top score.

Munich series at SAP Garden
Defense is key to success. “We know that if we do the right things defensively, we have a chance to win every game. That's the key to success,” said the goalkeeper after the victory against Ingolstadt. That's exactly what the Red Bulls have been doing consistently since the beginning of October: Twelve wins from their last 15 games have earned them an impressive 36 points – only Ingolstadt has been slightly more successful in the last seven weeks (37).
Sharks on a high thanks to Finnish coolness
However, the Sharks have nothing to be ashamed of. They won eleven games during this period and earned 32 points – putting them in third place. A major factor is the signing of a new goalkeeper: Janne Juvonen has made a huge impact. The Finn came from HC Ambrì-Piotta in Switzerland and has saved 93.6 percent of shots on goal in twelve appearances – the best record in the PENNY DEL. With his spectacular reflexes, he has quickly won the hearts of Haie fans.
MacLeod in a class of his own
Not new, but still one of the most influential players is Gregor MacLeod – perhaps even more important than ever before. The playmaker is currently the top scorer in the PENNY DEL (38 points in 25 games). That was not a certainty, as he lost his two congenial teammates Justin Schütz (Mannheim) and Alexandre Grenier (Augsburg) in the summer.
However, the center also harmonizes blindly with newcomer Patrick Russell (18 goals this season). Cologne has recently rotated on the left wing without the line losing any of its threat. Thanks in part to MacLeod and Russell, the Sharks are the most dangerous team in power play (rate: 33.7 percent), just behind league leaders Mannheim.

The balance sheet slightly favors Munich
For us, that means staying out of the penalty box—or defending as well as we did in the first two games of the season against Cologne when we were shorthanded. The Sharks' power play percentage was 11 percent (one goal in nine situations), well below their season average. That's one of the reasons we won 4-2 in Cologne back then and 2-0 most recently. Overall, we won the last three games – all of them in Cologne.
However, we were defeated in the last two home games. Now both teams are going into the next round in top form. Our guys want to carry the momentum from the six-point weekend into the next game and extend their seven-game winning streak at SAP Garden: third place is within reach.
