DEL Preview, Matchday 3: Red Bull München Visits the Bremerhaven Pinguins

North-South Summit: The Red Bulls Visit Bremerhaven // GamedayOn the opening weekend of the 2026/27 PENNY DEL season, the Red Bulls earned points in both games. They are now looking to secure their first road win on Friday: At 7:30 p.m., Coach Oliver David’s team will face the Pinguins Bremerhaven on the road.
Our Form
A 4-3 home win in a shootout in the season-opening showdown against Mannheim, followed by a point in a 3-4 overtime loss in Wolfsburg—the Red Bulls’ start to the season has been a real challenge. Things won’t get any easier in Bremerhaven, though. There, we’ll face a team that remains undefeated after two game days and has allowed only two goals so far.
Offensively, our guys have already shown what they’re capable of: seven goals so far after the first two games. Defensively, though, there’s still room for improvement. Conceding 3.5 goals per game isn’t the record we want to end up with.
But the team’s mentality was particularly evident in the 3–4 loss in Wolfsburg. After falling behind 2–3, the Red Bulls fought back, tied the game, and even had the better chances in the final period. The decisive goal for the hosts then came in overtime.

The Opponent
Bremerhaven has started the new season with two wins. Following a 3-1 victory over newly promoted Krefeld, the Pinguins also prevailed 2-1 at home against the Iserlohn Roosters on Sunday. Head coach Alexander Sulzer’s team thus sits atop the standings with a perfect six points after the opening weekend.
However, the team had to rebuild in several positions over the summer. With captain Jan Urbas, playmaker Ziga Jeglic, and hard-working forward Ross Mauermann, three long-time key players left the club. Urbas played 446 games for Bremerhaven, Jeglic made 329 appearances, and Mauermann even reached 464.
The team plans to make up for these departures through collective effort. New additions to the offense include Parker Tuomie, Alex Broadhurst, and Roman Kechter. On defense, however, the Pinguins are relying on a lot of continuity and the quality of players such as Akito Hirose, Nicholas Jensen, and Phillip Bruggisser. With Kristers Gudlevskis in goal, they also have one of the best goalies of recent DEL seasons.

The Showdown
Seven Munich goals will face off against a Bremerhaven defense that has only allowed two goals so far. For our guys, the main challenge will therefore be to find ways to break down the Penguins’ compact defense and stay patient. At the same time, they’ll need to transition quickly after losing the puck and give the hosts as little space as possible for their dangerous transition game.
The Red Bulls will have to capitalize on their chances consistently. Bremerhaven has allowed very little in the first few games—and has been able to rely on a defense that ranks among the league’s most solid so far.
Player Spotlight
Taro Hirose vs. Akito Hirose—for the two brothers from Canada, this is a special matchup. While Taro provides pace and creativity as the playmaker in Munich, Akito is one of Bremerhaven’s key defensemen.
In the four head-to-head matchups last season, Taro was the most productive player with seven points, while his brother Akito tallied four points, making him Bremerhaven’s second-leading scorer. In the end, both players celebrated two wins each with their respective teams.
On Friday, sibling affection will take a back seat on the ice. For at least 60 minutes, the focus will be on which team—and which player—comes out on top.

Facts and Figures
After two game days, the Red Bulls have three points and head into the matchup with a goal differential of 7–7. Bremerhaven, on the other hand, is the only team besides Nuremberg to have won both of its games so far. The Pinguins have a goal differential of 5–2.
Fun fact: Bremerhaven has scored all of its goals this season in the second period; there have been no goals in the first or third periods so far. Our guys are also still scoreless in the third period—even though that was our strongest period during preseason.
In total, the two teams have faced off 58 times in the PENNY DEL so far. The Red Bulls have won 35 of those matchups—18 of them in Bremerhaven. This puts Munich’s away win percentage at 62 percent—slightly higher than their win rate in home games against the Pinguins, where our team has emerged victorious in 59 percent of those matchups.
