Saturday, 20. September 2025 | DEL preview, Matchday 4: Red Bull München visits the Straubing Tigers
Giving 100 percent effort and heart in the derby against the Straubing TigersRieder: “Temperature on the ice is rising”// DEL - PREVIEWThe second game of the three-game derby series takes EHC Red Bull München to the Straubing Tigers. The game starts on Sunday at the Eisstadion am Pulverturm at 4:30 p.m. (live on MagentaSport and in our blog). After Friday evening's 6-3 home win against Augsburg, the Red Bulls are looking to follow up with another victory in Lower Bavaria – and thus record their first six-point weekend of the season. Tobias Rieder is looking forward to the clash: "The atmosphere is always good in derbies – whether at home or away. The temperature on the ice rises. It's great fun and you're extra motivated."
Plenty of goals in recent clashes
The fans also got their money's worth in the recent derbies between Munich and Straubing: 28 goals were scored in the last four clashes – that's seven goals per game. The results were completely balanced: both teams celebrated one home and one away win, scored 14 goals and conceded 14 goals.
Konrad Abeltshauser knows the special atmosphere from his 35 matches against Straubing. Games like Friday's against Augsburg and now in Straubing are something special – and they are already being talked about days in advance. “There's a little more fire in training all week. You can just feel it,” says Abeltshauser, who is expected to play his 515th DEL game for the Red Bulls on Sunday, moving him past Daryl Boyle and into second place behind Maxi Kastner in our list of record players.

Tigers undergoing change
The Straubing Tigers underwent a facelift in the summer. Key players such as forwards JC Lipon, Taylor Leier, and Travis St. Denis, as well as defenders Justin Braun, Nelson Nogier, and Philip Samuelsson, are no longer on board. In their place, Zac Leslie and Nicolas Beaudin, among others, have joined the defense and can provide momentum in building up play.
This should benefit forwards Tyler Madden and Nick Halloran in particular. Both new signings bring pace to the offense. In addition, Stefan Loibl has returned after years in Sweden and most recently in Mannheim. The Tigers' goal is clear: to play quickly and directly towards the opponent's goal.
Two former Munich players in Lower Bavaria
Goaltender Henrik Haukeland also plays a key role.
The Norwegian was voted DEL goalkeeper of the season in 2022/23, but was unable to prevent Düsseldorfer EG from being relegated last year. Now he is starting a new chapter in Straubing. Like Filip Varejcka, who moved from the Red Bulls to Straubing in the summer, Haukeland also has a Munich past. Now it's time for a reunion.

Full commitment in the tiger cage
There's no question that the game in Straubing will be a big challenge – but our guys are ready, Abeltshauser assures us. “The fact that we won the game against Augsburg won't matter on Sunday. You just have to go into every derby with 100 percent commitment and heart,” says the defender. Only then can you leave the ice as the winner. On Sunday, the Red Bulls want to be that winner.
