“The man with the seventh sense”: That's Phillip Sinn.“Who are you?” – the Red Bulls portrait series// PORTRAITIn the ninth edition of “Who are you?”, we met with Phillip Sinn at the Bullstore in SAP Garden. Youthful indiscretions, dream vacations, character traits—find out everything about our new addition!
Phillip Sinn not only feels right at home on the ice, but also in our official fan shop. After all, the 21-year-old also likes to stroll through various shops in his free time. “In recent years, I've come to enjoy shopping,” he confirms. Hoodies, shoes, or T-shirts? It doesn't matter! “I don't have anything specific that I look for. The overall picture matters,” Sinn summarizes.
Even as a professional ice hockey player, the youngster, who is only entering his third professional year and is also studying sports management, offers the complete package. The U23 defensive player is considered an agile and strong defender. Sinn wants to play “aggressively, purposefully, and intelligently.” “There are no friends on the ice,” he makes clear.
Sinn is eager to play against the Adler
Not even in our at least four games against the Adler Mannheim in the new season. On the contrary—Sinn is extra motivated when playing against the Kurpfälzer. Background: Sinn was born in Mannheim and played for the Adler's youth team until the U16s. “My father used to play ice hockey himself and was also a coach. That's why it was practically in my blood from birth. There were also a few people in my kindergarden who played ice hockey. And then I wanted to try it out at the running school in Mannheim back then,” he recalls, looking back on his beginnings.

Several years later, he is reunited with the club of his youth. “But that won't be difficult, not at all. I'm a Munich resident now, and I'll throw myself into the game against Mannheim just as I would against any other team,” Sinn promises. “I'll probably even play extra hard against Mannheim, simply because it's my hometown.”
“I always believed I could do it.”
After taking his first career steps in Mannheim, Sinn moved to the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy in 2018, like some of our other players. In his first year, he was very homesick, especially during the Christmas season. “But apart from that, it was a great time all round, with lots of wonderful memories,” he recalls. What were the best ones? “When we played soccer outside in the evenings in the summer. It was so much fun,” he explains with a laugh.
Sinn can't remember any pranks from his time at the academy. That's actually surprising, considering there were so many teenagers in the same place. “We didn't sneak out very often,” says Sinn. But then he remembers one youthful indiscretion. He admits: “In my first two years at school, I was perhaps a little disrespectful at times. But if you wanted to be funny and popular in class, you just had to do silly things. Looking back now, I'm not necessarily proud of that,” he admits openly.
However, our summer signing never lost sight of his goal: his dream of becoming a professional ice hockey player. “There was never a moment when I realized that it might actually happen. But I always believed that I could do it,” he emphasizes confidently.
DEL debut for the Red Bulls with a derby win
In the 2022/23 season, the time had come. Sinn, who was still playing for EC Red Bull Salzburg's U18 team at the time, was sent to Munich for two games and made his debut on November 4, 2022, in a 3-2 overtime win against the Straubing Tigers in the PENNY DEL. So he started right away with a derby win! Four days later, he got his second chance in a 3-2 win against the Kölner Haie.

From summer 2023 onwards, Sinn became a permanent member of the Salzburg professional squad. During his two years in Mozartstadt, the left-handed shooter won the ICEHL championship both times. The first title in particular had a special story behind it. “We won game seven of the final in Klagenfurt. That was basically my breakthrough and just an amazing time,” recalls the German U20 national player.
“But the two U20 World Championships I've played in so far have also been special. Especially the one in Canada,” he says. No wonder: it's not every day that a young player gets to compete in such a big international tournament in front of a large crowd in the motherland of ice hockey. In January 2024, he even captained the DEB team at the World Championships in Sweden, helping them to avoid relegation.
Working with a sports psychologist
Sinn already has a number of successes to his name in his still young career. Experiences and triumphs that would not have been possible without some special people in his life. "My father was always there for me. I didn't like having him as my coach because he usually pushed me harder than anyone else. But it was especially important to him that I stay grounded,“ says Sinn. ”My mother was also always a good person for me to talk to. It's only when you get older that you realize what a sacrifice they made. I'm very grateful for that."
Interesting fact: Sinn has also been working closely with Simon Kohl, a sports psychologist at the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy, for several years. “He has helped me tremendously,” says Sinn.

Five Red Bulls off to Hawaii?
Off the ice, Sinn is totally relaxed, empathetic, and open. And that goes down well with our team. He spends a lot of time with Simon Wolf, Veit Oswald, Nikolaus Heigl, and Philipp Krening in particular. Maybe the five buddies will even take off together as a travel group during the next long break?
In any case, they already have a vacation destination in mind. “Hawaii, we already talked about it in the summer. From everything you see on the internet, it's probably beautiful,” Sinn says enthusiastically. Hopefully, the guys will share some vacation impressions with us!
“The man with the seventh sense”
Of course, his boarding pass would also say “Sinn” (meaning ‘sense’ in German). A surname that invites a few puns, doesn't it? “There have been quite a few, probably every day during my time at the academy,” he confirms with a wink. However, the Salzburg stadium announcer was particularly original. He always announced him as follows when he entered the rink: “The man with the seventh sense...”.
Has our Wolfi already thought of something for the introduction of our number 43 at the SAP Garden? You can find out live on September 14, shortly before the first face-off at 2:00 p.m. against Bremerhaven.
