How is summer training going?Ice times, fitness, and other activities// CURRENTAs summer slowly arrives in Munich, some players are already sweating it out on the ice again. Assistant coach Max Kaltenhauser explains what our boys' training schedule looks like and what our coaches are currently focusing on.New stadium, new opportunities: SAP Garden offers EHC Red Bull München players the chance to keep fit on the ice all year round in Munich. In addition, there is a state-of-the-art, well-equipped gym and regeneration areas with a sauna, whirlpool, and cold water pool. These are ideal conditions for a summer training group that is already highly motivated.
Head coach Oliver David and Kaltenhauser, who is returning to his role as assistant coach for the new season, are currently spending most of their time on the ice with the U23 players. They are regularly joined by training guests from overseas. Julian Lutz, JJ Peterka, and Maksymilian Szuber, a trio with a Munich past, are currently part of the team. The group on the ice usually consists of eight to twelve players.
Kaltenhauser: “We want to keep the fun in it”
“The experienced players who are here are currently focusing primarily on fitness and off-ice training,” explains Kaltenhauser. In addition to parts of our Bavarian contingent, including newcomer Brady Ferguson and Les Lancaster, who is about to become a father for the second time, this also includes two licensed players from North America.

“We are currently working with the young players on a wide range of skills on the ice. This is individual and varies with each training session. We want to keep it fun, especially in the summer, which is why we play a lot. If you push yourself too hard in the summer and don't have a chance to relax, it's going to be a long season,” Kaltenhauser explains.
Coaches focus on variety in the summer
Currently, there are two fixed ice sessions per week, with an increased focus on training away from the ice rink. Cycling tours, padel tennis matches, and soccer games provide a sporting change from the daily training routine. In the gym, the players are accompanied daily by our fitness coaches Thomas Aufschnaiter and Thomas Winkler. Together, they have also drawn up plans for players who are not spending their summer in Munich.
“We have an app where the players can enter their training performance. We can see the results and make adjustments remotely. We also talk to the players regularly on the phone,” explains Kaltenhauser.

Fitness tests are scheduled for the end of July
Once all players have returned by the end of July at the latest, they will undergo mandatory fitness tests before the start of the season. These tests also include orthopedic examinations. Individual adjustments to training plans based on the status quo will then ensure optimal preparation. “It's often just a matter of nuances and load management. It's not really the case with us that someone just spends the summer barbecuing and surfing,” jokes Kaltenhauser.
At the beginning of August, the entire team will return to the ice and the final phase will begin. This will be followed by various preparatory tournaments and the Red Bulls Salute on August 22 and 23 in Zell am See-Kaprun.
