Match report
Zug came out of the locker room with momentum, while Munich defended attentively and had the first big chance on a power play: Gabriel Fontaine found himself alone in front of the goal after a nice combination, but Leonardo Genoni prevented the newcomer from scoring his first goal. The Red Bulls continued to play with enthusiasm and were rewarded with the opening goal after nine minutes:
Genoni couldn't hold onto a Lancaster shot, Eisenschmid was on hand to tap in and make it 1-0. But Zug also showed flashes of their class. Lukas Bengtsson took advantage of one opportunity to equalize just as a Munich penalty expired (16th minute). Genoni reacted brilliantly against Brady Ferguson to keep the score at 1-1 after 20 minutes.
The four-time German champions dominated the middle period, but there was little action in front of goal. That changed after a penalty against Zug. The Red Bulls kept the puck moving, created chances and took advantage of one of them: Ehliz converted Ferguson's assist to make it 2-1 (27th minute). At the other end, Simon Wolf continued to benefit from the strong defensive work of his teammates, but then the Swiss struck back out of nowhere: Andreas Wingerli scored without warning to make it 2-2 (34th minute). Shortly afterwards, Wolf was in the spotlight again when he spectacularly thwarted a double chance for Zug. The score remained unchanged going into the second intermission.
In the final period, both teams played lively offense. Jeremy McKenna was inches away from making it 3-2 for the Red Bulls (44th), but the post saved Genoni. Instead, it was the Swiss who celebrated – and that while shorthanded: Nando Eggenberger scored a shorthanded goal to make it 3-2 for EVZ (47th). Zug then played cleverly and hardly allowed Munich to create any dangerous chances in front of goal. Wolf made a brilliant save against Dominik Kubalik in the 55th minute, but the former NHL pro made amends shortly afterwards and made it 4-2 (56th). Munich coach David opted to play with a sixth field player in the closing stages, but the risk did not pay off: Fabrice Herzog scored into an empty net (58th) to seal the 5-2 victory.
Konrad Abeltshauser: “It was a good game, we had a chance to win for a long time. In the end, we conceded some unfortunate goals. The system is new to many players, but you can see how we are feeling more comfortable with each change. Overall, we took a good step forward today.”
