Course of the game
Despite the short preparation time, the Red Bulls quickly found their rhythm. A lively, evenly-matched duel developed in which Yasin Ehliz had the first top chance - but SCB goalkeeper Adam Reideborn made a 1-on-1 save (10th). Bern also created opportunities, but Mathias Niederberger was the last man standing. An entertaining first period ended without any goals.
The opening phase of the middle period belonged to the four-time German champions. Munich pushed for the lead - but without success, as Reideborn was on the spot against Taro Hirose (29.). Shortly afterwards, Bern struck coldly: Fabian Ritzmann finished off a counter-attack to make it 1:0 for the top club from Switzerland (30'). The Red Bulls remained true to their game plan thereafter. A few seconds before the break, they had a great chance to equalize: Adam Brooks played Gabriel Fontaine, who did a lot right - but failed to beat Reideborn.
Exactly one minute after the changeover, Bern struck for the second time after a counter-attack. The scorer to make it 2:0: Alexander Yakovenko (42'). The Swiss then acted confidently and conceded little. Nevertheless, the game became exciting once again as McKenna reduced the deficit to 1:2 (57') after preparatory work by Taro Hirose. The Red Bulls then threw everything forward, but even with a sixth outfield player they were unable to score again.
Oliver David: "Our effort today was outstanding. The game was hard-fought and the boys gave their all. I think we deserved more than one goal. But the truth is that they could have scored more than two goals. It was a close game and I'm glad that we scored a deserved goal at the end. We gained a lot of positive insights."
Goals: 1:0 | 29:45 | Fabian Ritzmann 2:0 | 41:00 | Alexander Yakovenko 2:1 | 56:48 | Jeremy McKenna
