Game Summary
Munich was the more active team early on, enjoying more possession and spending more time in the offensive zone. However, the first good scoring chance by Lucas Thaler came to nothing (5th minute)—as did Salzburg’s initial shots, which were easy saves for Mathias Niederberger. In the seventh minute, Ville Pokka made a quick play: After his long pass, Ehliz broke away and, on a solo rush, slid the puck past Atte Tolvanen to make it 1–0 (8th). Shortly afterward, the four-time German champions failed to capitalize on a power play. The Austrians also had their chances, but no further goals were scored before the break. Thus, after an intense and evenly matched 20 minutes, the teams headed to the locker room with Munich holding the lead.
The second period remained an open contest with chances on both sides. Salzburg got off to the better start: Nick Poisson tested Niederberger just a few seconds in, but the Munich goaltender made a strong save. Shortly afterward, Nikita Bloch narrowly missed the net (23rd minute). After that, Munich stepped up their game. Tobias Rieder had a good chance (26th), but the second goal wouldn’t come at first. In the 39th minute, it finally happened: With Munich on the power play, McKenna pounced on a rebound and made it 2–0. Oliver David’s team headed into the second intermission with that lead.
In the final period, both teams continued to play offensively at first. The Salzburg team got another power-play chance—and this time, Poisson scored with a spectacular shot into the corner (46th minute). Niederberger had no chance on that shot and was called into action several times afterward, as the Austrians now pressed for the equalizer. In the 55th minute, the win2day ICE Hockey League’s record champion was rewarded: Jayden Lee scored to make it 2–2. Shortly afterward, during another power play, they even had the chance to completely turn the game around. But Niederberger saved Munich with a brilliant last-second save, sending the game into overtime.
Salzburg carried that momentum into overtime, before Munich was able to mount another offensive push. But it was the Austrians who scored the goal: With five seconds left in overtime, Michael Raffl scored on a solo rush to give Salzburg a 3–2 victory—and a spot in the Red Bull Salute final.

Jeremy McKenna:
“It was a back-and-forth game for a long time. In the third period, however, we lost our momentum because of the penalty, and Salzburg ultimately managed to turn the game around. Overall, they were the better team today. Now we need to put this game behind us as quickly as possible—and strike back tomorrow.”
