Course of the match
Both teams got off to an energetic start and the first top chances were not long in coming. Tobias Rieder narrowly missed giving Munich the lead in the 4th minute, before Rögle capitalized on his first power play shortly afterwards: Leon Bristedt buried a blocked shot past Mathias Niederberger to make it 0:1 (8'). The Red Bulls' reply followed promptly: After a shot by Jeremy McKenna, Christoffer Rifalk let it bounce and Murphy uncompromisingly chased the puck into the corner to make it 1:1 (11'). The pace was also high after that. Both teams played lively forward and created further chances - including a solo effort from Yasin Ehliz, which Rifalk defused (19'). The teams went into the first break at 1:1.
Just two minutes after the restart, Albin Sundsvik capitalized on a quick counter-attack to give Rögle a 2:1 lead. The Swedes kept the pressure on after that: a post goal by Bristedt (23rd) and several strong saves by Niederberger prevented worse from the Red Bulls' point of view. Munich then got back into the game and the equalizer was in the air. Rieder (28) and Markus Eisenschmid (31) tested Rifalk, but the Rögle keeper was wide awake. Both teams had periods of pressure in the remainder of the third period, but the score did not change before the second break.
The spectators also saw a fast-paced game in the final period. Outnumbered, Brady Ferguson had the chance to equalize, but narrowly failed (46'). Almost on the counterattack, Rögle made the most of his opportunity: Fredrik Olofsson finished off a counter-attack to make it 3:1 (47'). A little later, Simon Zether made it 4:1 (53'). The Red Bulls threw everything forward again in the final phase, but the Swedes' compact defense did not allow anything more.
Brady Ferguson:
"I expected it to be a very intense game. It was even for a long time. In the end, little things made the difference."
