A banging start: Red Bulls kick off the new DEL season in Cologne

A banging start: Red Bulls kick off the new DEL season in Cologne// DEL - PREVIEWIt's finally time to get started again: our team kicks off the new PENNY DEL season on Friday (7:30 p.m.). The season opener is an away game against the Kölner Haie (live on MagentaSport and in our blog).
After intensive preparation, our team is finally ready to compete for points. Seven test matches, three wins, many insights—that's the balance sheet before the start. The last test match was encouraging: with a 3-2 victory in the Warrior Cup final against Nuremberg, the team had a successful dress rehearsal. “The victory has given us even more confidence. We have worked hard over the last few weeks and are very well prepared. That gives us a good feeling,” said captain Patrick Hager ahead of the season opener in Cologne.
New signings making their mark
Particularly positive: the new signings have settled in very well. One of them is Jeremy McKenna. The striker recently shone in the victory against his former club Nuremberg with a brace. The Canadian wants to prove his scoring prowess in Cologne too – and thus help coach Oliver David make a successful DEL debut.
Opponent check: Kölner Haie
The Haie have also been busy in the transfer market. In goal, Tobias Ancicka has been joined by Felix Brückmann (Mannheim), an experienced player, while in defense, Finns Oliwer Kaski (Jönköping) and Valtteri Kemiläinen (Sparta Prague) provide international class.

Patrick Russell brings scoring quality to the attack. The Dane was recently one of the top scorers on his team at Linköping in Sweden. New to the team is Tanner Kero, who has played 138 games in the NHL and also hails from Sweden (Jönköping). There are also other new additions such as Dominik Bokk (Frankfurt) and Ryan MacInnis (Mannheim), who are expected to provide additional depth in attack.
Good memories of Cologne
Cologne has been a good place for us in recent years. We won 13 of our last 15 away games at the Lanxess Arena, the largest arena in the DEL. However, one of the two defeats during this period came last season. In fact, Cologne won three of the four games between the two teams last season.
Our new signing Gabriel Fontaine had a better record. He helped the Eisbären Berlin to a 4-1 victory over the Haie in the 2025 final series. Overall, he won six of his nine games against Cologne, contributing eleven points. Hager would have no objection if the Canadian continued in the same vein. The captain emphasizes: “We need maximum performance from everyone.”
