Game Summary
In an offensively driven first period, Munich was initially the more active team, but Bolzano’s Matt Bradley had the first big chance (5th minute). He was denied by the strong Mathias Niederberger, as was Isaac Ratcliffe shortly afterward (8th minute). Luca Frigo also hit the post (10th minute). The Foxes pressed for the lead, but the Red Bulls had their chances as well: a shot by Veit Oswald hit the frame (11th minute). After that, the game became a evenly matched contest, though the Italians remained the more threatening side. Their efforts paid off shortly before the first intermission: Brad McClure scored to make it 1–0 (18th minute).
In the second period, Bolzano took control. The team from the ICE Hockey League won more faceoffs and played with greater purpose. Turner Elson had the best chance, but after a strong combination play, he missed the wide-open net (25th minute). Niederberger thwarted further opportunities. It wasn’t until just under 15 minutes into the period that Munich had its first major chance: Ehliz hit the crossbar, ushering in a strong stretch for the Red Bulls. The visitors now created chances every minute, but Marco Costantini saved the Foxes’ narrow lead heading into the break with some strong saves.
Munich carried that momentum into the final period and pushed Bolzano onto the defensive. An equalizer seemed imminent on several occasions. Ehliz, in particular, posed a constant threat—but luck wasn’t on his side at first: First, Costantini made the save (44th minute), then the post stood in the way of the equalizer (51st minute). In the 55th minute, the German national team forward finally had reason to celebrate. His goal to make it 1–1 brought the Red Bulls back into the game. The four-time German champions were now looking to seal the win in regulation time—and, 33 seconds before the end, they actually scored the 2–1 goal: Eisenschmid secured Munich’s victory in the final and, with it, the title at the South Tyrol Summer Classic.
Yasin Ehliz:
“It was a tough game. Bolzano played very well and put us under pressure. But we found a way to take control of the game starting in the middle of the second period—and then created some good scoring chances.”
