Game Summary
Linz came out strong to start the game. However, a power play early on didn’t yield any results because the Red Bulls defended well. Munich then stepped up their game—and capitalized on their first power play in the tenth minute: After a dream combination, the puck found its way to Kahun, who scored the 1-0 goal with a direct shot on his return to the ice. The four-time German champions now took control, played more aggressively in one-on-one situations, and created further scoring chances. However, Dylan Wells was unbeatable for the rest of the period. Since Mathias Niederberger kept a clean sheet at the other end, the score remained 1–0 after 20 minutes.
Linz also got off to a better start in the second period. While shorthanded, they created two dangerous chances in front of the Munich net, but the strong Niederberger prevented the equalizer (26th minute). The Red Bulls also had good opportunities but failed to extend their lead. In the 32nd minute, both teams changed goalies. Antoine Bibeau had been in net for only a few seconds when Kyle Topping tied the game with an unstoppable shot (33rd minute). It remained a hard-fought contest, but no further goals were scored before the break.
In the final period, Oliver David’s team got off to the better start, before a broken stick during Munich’s build-up play led to a Linz counterattack: Luis Lindner successfully finished the play (46th minute). The Red Bulls, however, remained unfazed and had the perfect response ready: Jeremy McKenna set up Carrick, who scored on his debut for Munich to tie the game at 2–2 (48th minute). The visitors carried that momentum forward and didn’t let a penalty stop them. Ehliz put his team back in the lead at 3–2 with a shorthanded goal (52.). Three minutes later, Krening even extended the lead to 4–2 (55th minute)—sealing the victory. Newcomer Carrick put the finishing touch on the 5–2 final score with an empty-net goal (60th minute), completing a two-goal performance.
Lucas Thaler:
“It was a great feeling to be back on the ice. For our first game, that was a solid performance from us, so it’s all the more satisfying to start with a win. The atmosphere here was great, as always—it was really fun. Now we’re really looking forward to the Red Bulls Salute.”
