Game summary
The Red Bulls got off to a better start in the clash between the two DEL teams and quickly established themselves in front of Evan Fitzpatrick's goal. Although Nuremberg managed to break free more often as the game progressed, Munich remained in control. In the 15th minute, Oliver David sent his power play formation onto the ice for the first time – and just seconds later, the puck was in the net: Gabriel Fontaine and Markus Eisenschmid passed the puck to McKenna, who finished coolly to make it 1-0 (16th minute). At the other end, Simon Wolf had a quiet spell, so the teams went into the first break with a narrow lead.
Just 17 seconds after the restart, Ehliz made it 2-0 after Patrick Hager had set him up perfectly. And the Red Bulls added to their lead – in the second power play of the evening, McKenna once again shot without warning and sank the puck into the corner in spectacular fashion (24th minute). Shortly afterwards, the crossbar prevented the new signing from scoring a third goal (29th minute). Munich dominated, but Nuremberg fought back: Greg Meireles reduced the deficit to 1-3 out of nowhere in the 30th minute, before Cole Maier even scored the equalizer on a power play (34th minute). The Ice Tigers now had chances to equalize, but the goal did not come before the second intermission.
In the final period, Munich's defense was solid again, with Nuremberg rarely posing a threat in front of goal. At the other end, Markus Eisenschmid (46th) and McKenna again had dangerous shots, but Fitzpatrick was unbeatable. The minutes ticked away before the Ice Tigers went all in during the final phase (58th minute) and pulled their goalkeeper in favor of a sixth field player. However, the Red Bulls defended their lead consistently and held on to win 3-2.
Markus Eisenschmid: “It was a good dress rehearsal for us against a strong opponent. We have to play hard for 60 minutes. Today, we made it exciting again after going 3-0 up. We defended strongly again at the back. In the end, it's not how big the win is that counts, but that you win.”
