Game Summary
The Red Bulls got off to a dream start in their title defense campaign. Just 59 seconds into the game, Kahun tapped in a rebound off a shot by Yasin Ehliz to make it 1–0. And that wasn’t all: Hede made it 2-0 (2nd minute) with his first goal in a Munich jersey, before Chris DeSousa, making his comeback, set up Carrick, who completed the hat trick in the third minute. Kaufbeuren then called a timeout and regained their composure, but this did nothing to alter the visitors’ dominance. The lead could have been even greater, but the score remained a well-deserved 3-0 after 20 minutes.
Munich kept up the pace even after the break. Kaufbeuren came under early pressure and initially struggled to break free in an organized manner. Ironically, a power play of their own (25th minute) took some of the momentum away from the Red Bulls. Shortly thereafter, Kaufbeuren had several scoring chances on the power play (28th minute), but Antoine Bibeau kept a clean sheet. Nevertheless, the four-time German champions remained the more dangerous side, creating further good chances through Ehliz (29th minute) and Brady Ferguson (32nd minute). Somewhat surprisingly, Thomas Schwamberger narrowed the gap to 1–3 (36th minute) during this phase. The momentum had now shifted. Kaufbeuren pressed for the tying goal and had reason to celebrate again in the 38th minute: Sami Blomqvist’s goal to make it 2–3 also set the score after two periods.
In the final period, the Red Bulls stepped up their intensity again—and were rewarded early: Kastner scored from the blue line to make it 4–2 (42nd minute). Shortly afterward, Tobias Rieder just missed the net (44th minute). Even during another power play (46th minute), the fifth goal didn’t come because Rihards Babulis in the ESVK net made several good saves. On the other end, the hosts were clinical: While shorthanded, a shot by Eero Elo found its way into the net to make it 3–4 (52nd minute). In the thrilling closing minutes, Kaufbeuren gave it their all one last time, but Thaler sealed the deal with an empty-net goal to make it 5–3 (59th minute).
Brady Ferguson: “We didn’t play our best hockey today. We had a good three minutes, but then we stopped playing. Still, a win is a win. Tomorrow we’ll try to defend our title at the Warrior Cup.”
