Game summary
The derby started at a fast pace and with great intensity. Fontaine had an early chance to put Munich ahead (2nd minute), but Ingolstadt goalkeeper Devin Williams saved the solo effort. Shortly afterwards, the visitors survived the Red Bulls' first power play and further minutes of pressure without conceding a goal. By the middle of the period at the latest, an open exchange of blows had developed with good chances, but the goalies remained flawless. Williams saved against Ehliz (13th), among others, while Bibeau was unbeatable at the other end. After 20 hard-fought minutes, the teams went into the break without a goal.
The fans saw another open top-class game in the second period. The teams consistently sought to move forward and created some excellent chances, including shots that hit the post on both sides. First, Ingolstadt's Myles Powell hit the crossbar on a shorthanded counterattack (29th minute), and shortly afterwards, the post prevented Munich from taking the lead through Rieder (30th minute). The goalies continued to dominate the game. Bibeau was called into action a little more often, confidently stopping a solo effort from Powell in the 32nd minute – and thus playing a major role in the scoreless second period.
In the final period, the Upper Bavarian rivals played in a much more controlled manner, with clear scoring chances now few and far between. The game was mainly characterized by tension – until Fontaine broke the deadlock six minutes before the end. Williams was powerless against the Munich forward's well-placed shot. Ingolstadt threw everything at their opponents in the closing stages and brought on an extra attacker, but the plan didn't work. Instead, Eisenschmid and Ehliz sealed the victory with two empty-net goals within 30 seconds (59th minute). Rieder put the final nail in the coffin in the 60th minute to make it 4-0.
