Match report
“Be more difficult for the opponent,” Maximilian Kastner had demanded before the match for the Red Bulls. No sooner said than done: Munich presented themselves very aggressively and strong in challenges in the first period. Roosters goalie Hendrik Hane had to repeatedly demonstrate his skills in a one-goal game. Despite some very good chances for the four-time German champions, including a shot off the post by Ville Pokka, there were no goals in the first 20 minutes.
The Red Bulls continued to dominate in the second period and converted their superiority into the opening goal in the 23rd minute: Ferguson celebrated his first goal in the DEL. Even after going 1-0 up, Oliver David's team kept up the pressure and kept Hane's visiting defense busy. Iserlohn was hardly able to make any offensive impact, but then came out of nowhere to equalize and make it 1-1 at the break through Henrik Törnqvist (38th minute).
At the start of the final period, fans were initially presented with the familiar picture: chances for Munich, defensive work from Iserlohn. From the 44th minute, the Roosters played with a man advantage for four minutes, but the Red Bulls defended successfully and continued to attack undeterred. Their reward came in the 51st minute when McKenna deflected Ferguson's shot into the net to make it 2-1 – his first DEL goal in a Red Bull Munich jersey. Shortly before the end, Ferguson (60th) scored into the empty Iserlohn net to make it 3-1 with his second goal of the afternoon.
