Game summary
Frankfurt got off to a perfect start and was clinical in the first period: Ryan McKiernan took advantage of the first chance to take the lead (2nd minute). Shortly afterwards, the post prevented Dennis Lobach from scoring a second goal (3rd minute). Matthew Wedman did better, increasing the lead to 0-2 in the tenth minute. Antoine Bibeau was once again helpless. At the other end, Lions goalkeeper Cody Brenner prevented the home side from getting back into the game, including against Patrick Hager during a Munich power play (13th minute). The visitors went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
After the break, the game picked up pace. The Red Bulls were now playing more physically and with more determination in front of goal: Eisenschmid scored a spectacular goal during a power play (22nd minute). The game developed into a fast-paced back-and-forth affair with chances at both ends, including a solo effort by Frankfurt's Ty Glover (25th minute), which Bibeau brilliantly saved. Chris DeSousa came close to equalizing in the 35th minute, but his shot flew just wide. Munich was still behind after the second period, but now only by one goal.
In the final period, the Red Bulls first had to survive a double penalty kill. Frankfurt remained dangerous, but then Munich stepped up the pace. The chances were now coming thick and fast. Brady Ferguson (47th) and, shortly afterwards, Taro Hirose (49th) narrowly missed, before Sinn brought the four-time German champions back into the game with the equalizer to make it 2-2 (53rd). The direct shot was also Sinn's first goal in the PENNY DEL. In an exciting final phase, both goalkeepers prevented a decision. With the score at 2-2, the game went into overtime.
In overtime, the Lions pushed for the winning goal with a man advantage. The post saved Bibeau twice in a matter of seconds before Ehliz returned from the penalty box and scored a solo goal to give Munich a 3-2 victory (62nd minute).
