Game summary
The defensive lines dominated in the early stages. It was a bitter blow for the Red Bulls when goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger had to leave the ice in the eighth minute. Simon Wolf took his place, but was rarely called into action at first. At the other end, Brady Ferguson created the first dangerous offensive move, but Dustin Strahlmeier was there to save (8th minute). Otherwise, little happened in front of either goal until Jacob Hayhurst hit the post in the 13th minute during a counterattack by the visitors. Shortly thereafter, Wolf shone against Grizzlys top scorer Matt White. The game picked up speed, with chances on both sides, but no goals were scored before the first intermission.
In a curious second period, the four-time German champions got off to a better start, but a penalty took the momentum out of the game (25th minute). The Grizzlys stepped up their game, with Wolf now coming more into focus. In the 28th minute, the post saved the Munich goalie for the second time. During a five-minute power play for the Grizzlys, the visitors struck coldly: Jacob Hayhurst deflected the puck unstoppably to make it 0-1 in the 33rd minute. The Red Bulls' response to falling behind was prompt: First, Ferguson scored the equalizer on a shorthanded play (34th), before Wagner completed the shorthanded double strike with a hammer from the blue line to make it 2-1 (35th). The teams went into the break with this lead.
In the final period, the Red Bulls continued their lively play: Rieder took advantage of the first chance and made it 3-1 with a deflection (41st). After that, however, both teams lacked precision in their offense. The minutes passed without any clear chances or further goals, so Munich's two-goal lead held until the final phase. That's when Oliver David's team sealed the deal: DeSousa, making his comeback after a long injury break, converted captain Patrick Hager's assist (57th) to make it 4-1.
