Course of the game
Adam Brooks returned to the Red Bulls line-up after recovering from injury. Mathias Niederberger started in goal. The national keeper was directly challenged by Robin van Calster in the third minute. At the other end, Yasin Ehliz and Phillip Sinn set the first offensive accents, but both times the bar stood in the way of a goal (6th minute). A moment of shock shortly afterwards: defender Maximilian Daubner was hit in the face after an unfortunate collision and had to leave the ice. As a result, the 28-year-old was taken to hospital as a precaution to clarify a possible injury. After the eventful opening period, both defenses took control. There were still chances - including another Munich goal with the crossbar from Konrad Abeltshauser (15'). A short time later, Cologne piled on the pressure with superior numbers, but Niederberger could not be beaten. Janne Juvonen also kept a clean sheet in a wild first period. The teams went into the break at 0:0.
The defensive lines continued to dominate proceedings in the middle period. Both teams kept the space in front of their own goal tight and hardly allowed any dangerous shots. Instead of a festival of chances, the fans saw spectacular saves - such as from Abeltshauser, who saved with his stick in the greatest of emergencies after a cross-ice pass. The first goal came shortly afterwards: Sharks striker Gregor MacLeod deflected a shot from the blue line in the 35th minute to make it 0:1. The Red Bulls responded immediately and increased the pressure - but Tobias Rieder's goal at the post shortly before the second break was again just centimetres away from equalizing.
Munich were initially challenged defensively in the final period. It took just under eight minutes for Gabriel Fontaine to create the first good chance to equalize. As the game progressed, the Red Bulls increased their intensity. In the final phase, the four-time German champions put all their eggs in one basket and piled on the pressure with an extra attacker in double overtime - but Juvonen was the last man standing. The result was 0:1 from Munich's point of view and their first defeat in the third game after the Olympic break.

Phillip Sinn: "It was a game with playoff character against one of Cologne's top teams. It was another defensive duel that we narrowly lost in the end because we didn't take our chances. Even games like that can be instructive."
