DEL preview, match day 17: EHC Red Bull München visits the Kölner Haie

Red Bulls face another challenge on the Rhine: Munich travels to Cologne, its “favorite opponent”// DEL - PREVIEWOn Sunday, the Red Bulls will face the Kölner Haie for the second time this season. Before the Deutschland Cup break, both teams will face off in another intense battle at 2:00 p.m. (live on MagentaSport and in our blog).
After Friday evening's 4-0 victory against Adler Mannheim, our boys want to go into the short break with a second win on the Rhine. The same applies, of course, to the Kölner Haie, who are looking to celebrate a conciliatory end to the break after Friday's historic 3-10 defeat at ERC Ingolstadt.
Pokka's dream debut: A look back at the 4-2 win on the first match day
But the Rhinelanders have been struggling at home against us for years. In other words, Cologne is a promising venue for us, with Munich winning 14 of its last 16 away games in the cathedral city. So the Sharks are something like our “favorite opponent” on the road.
The Red Bulls have already made their mark at the Lanxess Arena again this season. They kicked off the current season with a convincing 4-2 victory on September 12. Ville Pokka scored twice (one goal, one assist) in his first DEL appearance, with Gabriel Fontaine, Tobias Rieder, and Veit Oswald also finding the net.

// DEL - HIGHLIGHTS
18 points from the last six home games
But since then, Cologne has only lost once at home, against Berlin (3-7), and coach Kari Jalonen's team has racked up six straight home wins. And because they are also doing well away from home, the Rhineland can certainly be very satisfied with the first phase of the season.
The special teams are also a real asset, with the Sharks among the top teams in the league in both power play and penalty killing.
MacLeod impresses, new Shark Juvonen right in the thick of it
Number one center Gregor MacLeod has played a huge part in this. The Canadian is currently the PENNY DEL's top scorer with 24 points (including ten goals).
He is closely followed by his line partner Patrick Russell with 21 points, and Nate Schnarr (16 points) has also been impressive so far. This also applies to another new signing from the summer. Defender Valtteri Kemilainen has a powerful shot from the blue line and has already scored seven times.

Cologne's latest signing also got off to a good start. Due to an injury to goalkeeper Felix Brückmann, Finnish player Janne Juvonen (most recently HC Ambri-Piotta) was signed just under two weeks ago. The 31-year-old celebrated a shutout in his very first appearance in the 5-0 win against Frankfurt, then secured the victory in Iserlohn (3-1) with some strong saves.
Incidentally, Juvonen and Pokka were both in the Finnish World Championship squad in 2021. Perhaps our number 22 has a tip or two on how to beat the Haie keeper.
