EHC Red Bull München: An Interview with Dominik Kahun – Part 1
Dominik, welcome back. What was your first thought when it became clear that you were actually heading back to Munich?
Dominik Kahun: “Thank you very much! It feels like coming home. My wife Antonia and I have been thinking about this for a long time and have been saying for a while that we’d like to come back. Now is the perfect time to do it. I’m overjoyed, and my whole family is thrilled to be back here.”
Teil 1: Dominik Kahun spricht über seine Rückkehr nach München
// INTERVIEW
Why do you think now is the perfect time for this?
Kahun: “We’ve been on the road for a long time now. Three years in North America, five years in Switzerland. I’ve always kept an eye on Munich during that time, seeing what the guys were up to and how things were going. All the while, it’s always been a dream of mine to play in and for Munich again. I said it back then, and now it feels right. My wife and I are expecting a baby. It also means a lot that our little boy will be born here in Munich.”
When you think back on your four years here, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? What do you immediately think of?
Kahun: “Munich quickly became my home. I met my wife here, which is why I spent a lot of time in the city during the summer. On the sports side, my fondest memories are, of course, the three championships we won. We had an outstanding team, a huge family. I think that’s one of the reasons we were so successful. That’s why I associate my family and my hockey family directly with Munich. And I have fond memories of the championship celebrations we shared.”
What do three championships at such a young age mean? How might that have paved a different path for you compared to players who have to wait until much later in their careers for such successes?
Kahun: “The older I get, the more I think about it. There are players who never get to celebrate a title in their entire career. That’s why I consider myself incredibly lucky to have played on such a strong team back then. I learned an incredible amount from the leaders on that team. Having guys like Michi Wolf, Keith Aucoin, or Jason Jaffray by your side, or Mads Christensen and Franky Mauer on my line—you can learn so much from them. When you win titles so early on and then don’t win any for a while, the drive to win just gets stronger and stronger. I just want to win. You do whatever it takes, no matter what. But that also gave me the confidence to compete in World Championships or the Olympics with the national team.”
Die #21 ist wieder da!
// WELCOME BACK
You're wearing the number 21 again with the Red Bulls. Christian Winkler once said, “The number 21 is always reserved for you here.” How much does it mean to you to wear that number again?
Kahun: “This means a lot to me—it’s something very special. I can’t wait to wear number 21 again. After my time in Munich, it was often assigned to someone else or hanging in the rafters. It was my first number when I started playing hockey as a little boy. Being able to wear it again now is just special. Taking the ice in front of the Munich fans with my number is a huge deal.”
Watch the video to find out what else our new-old number 21 has to say about his return and how Kahun looks back on his four years in Munich. Parts two and three of our big comeback interview will follow shortly.
