Red Bull München: Warnecke and Bolle Impress at the DEB U20 Training Camp
Both were part of the German Ice Hockey Federation’s roster for the U20 training camp held July 19–24 in Füssen. Afterward, the DEB squad traveled to Piestany, Slovakia, for a two-nation tournament, where two international games were on the schedule.
Warnecke: “The goal is, of course, the World Championship in Canada”
For Warnecke, who already played eleven games for Munich last season and is now a permanent member of the DEL roster, the camp was an important step toward his upcoming international commitments. The 18-year-old defenseman described the intense days in Füssen and Slovakia: “The training camp was definitely a lot of fun, and the last two weeks were very educational. First, we had a six-day camp in Füssen. In Piestany, we also had a few more practices before playing two games against Slovakia.”
From Germany’s perspective, both games were incredibly close. One game ended in a 2–3 loss in overtime, and the other in a 1–2 loss in regulation. Nevertheless, our boys are taking away positive experiences and a great deal of motivation for the upcoming challenges with the U20 team. “This training camp is taking place because, of course, this year’s goal is the World Championship in Red Deer, Canada. In preparation for that, this was the first time all the players who might be considered for the team came together,” said Warnecke.
Bolle Delighted with First-Time Nomination
Goaltender Bolle also gained valuable insights during the training camp. For the 18-year-old newcomer, being called up to the U20 squad for the first time was a special experience. “The training camp was special for me because, as one of the younger players, I was called up to the U20s for the first time. I was thrilled about the invitation and wanted to take advantage of the chance to show what I can do and learn as much as possible from the older players. The guys welcomed me with open arms, so I felt right at home.”
The young goaltender described a varied and challenging program that included sessions both on and off the ice: “During the camp, we had intense sessions on the ice, athletic training, video analysis, and team meetings. The goal was to improve our systems, come together as a team, and continue to develop at the international level.”
“Valuable Experience” for Bolle
From his perspective, such initiatives are particularly valuable with an eye toward the future: “These training camps are important because the coaching staff can assess where each player stands, integrate new players, and prepare early for upcoming challenges and the U20 World Championship. The two games against Slovakia were then a good litmus test. For me personally, it was a valuable experience to compete at this level against older players. Overall, it was a really good week from which I was able to take a lot away.”
With their appearances in the DEB jersey, Max Bolle and Moritz Warnecke have taken another important step in their development—and at the same time have proven themselves worthy of consideration for the upcoming preparations leading up to the U20 World Championship in Canada.
