Match day 17, DEL: EHC Red Bull München wins in Cologne
In front of 18,600 spectators at the LANXESS arena, Patrick Hager and Markus Eisenschmid scored the goals for coach Oliver David's team. Mathias Niederberger kept a clean sheet for the second game in a row. The four-time German champions continue their campaign on November 13 (7:30 p.m.) with an away game at Pinguins Bremerhaven.
Game summary
The Red Bulls dominated the early stages of the game, but after Taro Hirose had the first good chance (4th minute), the Sharks became more offensive. Niederberger in the visitors' goal now had to intervene more frequently. However, the German national goalkeeper was wide awake and thwarted top chances from Juhani Tyrväinen (5th minute) and Veli-Matti Vittasmäki (15th minute), among others. In between, there was the first power play of the game (12th minute), but Munich was unable to find a gap in the Haie defense. Because Cologne also failed to capitalize on a power play situation in the final phase of the period, the teams went into the break scoreless after an interesting 20 minutes.
After the break, both teams continued to give little away. It was an intense game, with plenty of battles for the puck, but clear chances were few and far between at first. That changed in the minutes after the power break. It was now blow after blow: first, Yasin Ehliz skated alone towards the Haie goal, but Janne Juvonen was there to make the save (30th minute). At the other end, Niederberger shone against Tyrväinen (31st minute). And just seconds later, Munich had another chance – this time with success: Dillon Heatherington shot, Patrick Hager reacted quickest and scored to make it 1-0 for the visitors (32nd minute). The Red Bulls then increased the tempo, but were unable to score another goal in the second period.
Cologne started the final period with momentum, but the Red Bulls survived the early stages without conceding a goal and remained defensively solid. A shot by Patrick Russell (48th minute), which narrowly missed the goal, remained the Sharks' only notable chance for a long time. A power play finally sparked the hosts' final offensive, with Nate Schnarr hitting the crossbar (54th minute). During this period of pressure, Markus Eisenschmid took advantage of a Munich counterattack to make it 2-0 and seal the victory.
