Game summary
Munich pushed forward from the start, but Glasgow took full advantage of their first counterattack: Hugo Roy put the Scots ahead after just 44 seconds. The Clan then defended consistently and initially gave the Red Bulls little space – until the four-time German champions' first power play. Jeremy McKenna and Luis Schinko (13th) had dangerous shots on goal, but Sami Aittokallio was still unbeatable. Shortly after the penalty expired, the Finnish goalie was finally beaten: Veit Oswald found Krening, who placed the puck precisely next to the post – 1-1 (14th). The Red Bulls were now clearly in control, but there were no further goals before the first intermission.
At the start of the second period, Simon Wolf took over from Mathias Niederberger in the Munich goal. There was little action in front of goal at first, but the intensity increased. There were penalties on both sides. Glasgow had a great chance to take the lead with a two-man advantage, but Wolf made a strong save (28th). Just seconds later, the Red Bulls struck: Hirose scored to make it 2-1 while his team was down a man (28th minute). The game was now picking up speed. Wolf thwarted another chance for the Scots shortly afterwards (30th minute), and Ehliz immediately responded by making it 3-1 (31st minute). Munich then controlled the game and took their two-goal lead into the second intermission.
The Red Bulls continued to play confidently in the final period and added to their lead early on: Hirose, in brilliant form, converted a 2-on-1 counterattack himself to make it 4-1 (44th minute). Glasgow was not discouraged, however, and reduced the deficit shortly afterwards through Deven Sideroff (46th minute), but Munich remained the clearly better team. Oliver David's team allowed few shots on goal and continued to make their mark on offense. Lancaster converted one of the chances in the 53rd minute to make it 5-2. That was how it stayed.
Yasin Ehliz: "It wasn't easy today. They played hard and tried to hold their own physically. We knew we had to play our game. We did that better in the second period. We played our attacks faster and took advantage of some of our chances. Now we have the final tomorrow and then we're looking forward to the start of the DEL season."
