Game Summary
Belfast tested Mathias Niederberger as early as the first minute, and he was right on his feet. A period of feeling each other out followed, before the Red Bulls took control after five minutes. There were no major scoring chances for either team at first. It was a close call after a Giants counterattack while shorthanded, which Kaleb Pearson finished by hitting the side netting (9th minute). Munich also had chances during this power play, but nothing became truly dangerous. The final remained scoreless until the 16th minute—then the Northern Irish took the lead: The puck landed somewhat fortuitously in the slot with Jake Gaudet, who left Niederberger no chance with a well-placed shot to make it 0–1. No further goals were scored before the first intermission.
The Red Bulls came out of the locker room with momentum and had their best chances of the game so far right at the start of the second period, but Lucas Thaler (21st minute) and Chris DeSousa (22nd minute) were unable to beat Jake Kupsky in the Giants’ net. Shortly afterward, another power play came up empty, but the equalizer was in the air—and it came in the 28th minute following Hager’s impressive individual effort: The captain skated in front of the net and slipped the puck past Kupsky to tie the game at 1–1. The Red Bulls remained the dominant team and turned the game around with a rebound goal by Rieder (33rd minute). In the closing minutes of the period, Rieder even scored his second goal of the game on a beautiful power-play combination. Thus, the four-time German champions headed into the second intermission with a 3–1 lead.
The Red Bulls remained in control in the final period, while Belfast struggled to keep up with the fast pace. Penalties followed. Kahun mercilessly capitalized on this with his goal to make it 4–1 after a beautiful passing sequence (47th minute). The three-goal lead was briefly threatened during a Giants power play when Niederberger had to make a brilliant save against Pearson (54.), but aside from that, Munich had everything under control. In the penultimate minute, McKenna scored to make the final score 5–1. Shortly afterward, Oliver David’s team celebrated successfully defending their Warrior Cup title.
Tobias Rieder:
“It’s great to be able to defend a title. We played a good game today. We played smart, held our own physically, and capitalized on our chances on the power play.”
