Game summary
Munich started with a lot of offensive pressure, with Frankfurt goalie Cody Brenner called into action several times right from the start. However, the Lions survived the early stages unscathed and suddenly came close to taking the lead: Maksim Matushkin hit the post on a power play (9th minute). Both teams continued to push forward, creating further chances. In the 15th minute, the puck danced on the Munich goal line, but goalie Mathias Niederberger and Fabio Wagner cleared it in the nick of time. Shortly before the break, Chris DeSousa appeared unmarked in front of Brenner, who reacted brilliantly (20th minute). After an intense 20 minutes, the teams went into the break goalless.
Frankfurt got off to a dream start in the second period, with Ty Glover putting the Lions ahead after just 15 seconds. Shortly afterwards, the post prevented Adam Brooks from giving Munich the perfect response (22nd minute). The Red Bulls now shifted up several gears and created chance after chance. Frankfurt was barely able to break free, especially in the final phase of the period, but Brenner kept a clean sheet in the second period as well. The Lions thus took their narrow lead into the second intermission.
It was a similar story in the final period: Oliver David's team continued to invest a lot of energy and were rewarded in the 49th minute. After a rebound, Kastner scored with a volley to make it 1-1 – Munich's 40th shot on goal that evening. An open exchange of blows ensued, before the Red Bulls stepped up the pace again in the closing stages. The visitors pushed for the winner, but there were no further goals in regular time.
Overtime was a quick affair: Lions forward Chris Wilkie scored after 40 seconds to make it 2-1 to Frankfurt and secure the extra point for the home side.
