Game summary
Munich came out of the locker room with a lot of momentum and was rewarded for its strong start in the first power play of the derby: Pokka scored the opening goal with a screened shot shortly before the end of the penalty (6th minute). The game then developed into a balanced, fast-paced affair with attentive defenses. There were no scoring chances during this phase – until Maximilian Daubner appeared unmarked in front of the Straubing goal but shot just over the bar (13th minute). A few seconds later, Antoine Bibeau, who was rarely called into action, prevented Filip Varejcka from equalizing (13th minute). The longer the period went on, the more dangerous Munich became in front of goal. However, there were no further goals before the first break. The home side went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead and a decent number of chances.
Munich also had the first big chance in a spectacular second period, but Florian Bugl saved Tobias Rieder's solo effort (23rd minute). Shortly afterwards, the visitors cheered as Josh Melnick successfully deflected the puck to make it 1-1 (25). Just three minutes later, Alex Green completed the visitors' double strike on the power play (28.). Suddenly, Straubing was on top, but the Red Bulls had the perfect answer – and turned the game around in the 30th minute with two goals in eight seconds: First, Oswald scored to make it 2-2, before Fontaine added the 3-2. The visitors then changed their goalkeeper: Henrik Haukeland was now between the posts and was unbeatable in the second period – as was Bibeau. So, despite further attempts on goal, Munich remained narrowly ahead 3-2 after 40 minutes.
Straubing increased the tempo in the final period, while Munich concentrated on defense and allowed few chances. But the visitors didn't need many chances that evening and equalized again through Elis Hede (45th minute). Once again, the Red Bulls responded strongly: in the 50th minute, Brooks shook off an opponent and kept his cool in front of Haukeland to make it 4-3 (50th minute). The narrow lead held until the final stages. The Tigers then put all their eggs in one basket with a sixth field player – without success, as Rieder sealed the deal shortly afterwards with his empty-net goal to make it 5-3 (59th minute).
