Match report
The Red Bulls got off to a better start and struck early: Fontaine scored on the power play after a hard shot from Jeremy McKenna to make it 1-0 (4th minute). Shortly afterwards, Antoine Bibeau distinguished himself at the other end in the visitors' first power play (5th minute). Munich remained the dominant team, but Joacim Eriksson initially prevented a second goal. The narrow lead held until the 16th minute, when Hirose made it 2-0 after an assist from Chris DeSousa – which was also the score at the end of the first period.
After the break, Schwenningen stepped up their game, but the Red Bulls remained in control and even had the chance to make it 3-0 when Philipp Krening hit the crossbar (29th minute). Nevertheless, the Wild Wings reduced the deficit in the 33rd minute with a direct shot from Kyle Platzer. The visitors carried their momentum forward but were unable to beat Bibeau again in the second period. Munich went into the break with a narrow 2-1 lead.
In the final period, the Red Bulls picked up the pace again, but little happened in front of goal at first. That changed in the 50th minute when Oswald found a small gap in the short corner and made it 3-1. Shortly afterwards, Konrad Abeltshauser missed a chance to double the lead. Even a powerful power play failed to produce a fourth goal, so the game remained exciting. In the final phase, Schwenningen threw everything forward, giving Munich space for counterattacks, but the Red Bulls' 3-1 victory remained unchanged.
