Course of the match
Munich initially set the tone and had the first top chance early on through Yasin Ehliz (1st), which Mirko Pantkowski saved. The Löwen goalie was also unbeatable in the subsequent powerplay (from the 4th minute). The Red Bulls remained in control of the game, Frankfurt defended consistently and worked their way into the game better as it progressed. The visitors had the best offensive action in their first overtime game (from the 17th minute), but Antoine Bibeau kept a clean sheet. The opening period remained goalless.
The Lions took the momentum into the middle period. Michael Joyaux hit the post twice in the space of a few seconds (24th), while Bibeau thwarted further chances. Markus Schweiger then gave the Canadian no chance in the 27th minute and put Frankfurt ahead. The Red Bulls responded by stepping up the pace and were rewarded: Fontaine deflected in a power play to make it 1:1 (29'). Shortly afterwards, the visitors were celebrating again when Daniel Pfaffengut made it 1-2, also in overtime (33'). Munich then worked on equalizing again, but failed to do so before the second break.
The four-time German champions stepped up the intensity, but had to remain vigilant as Frankfurt repeatedly made pinpricks - such as in the 43rd minute through Carter Rowney. At the other end, the crossbar prevented Fontaine from equalizing (46'). The Red Bulls invested a lot, but time was running against them. Oliver David brought on the extra attacker around 90 seconds before the end - to no avail. Frankfurt's Maksim Matushkin scored an empty-net goal to make it 3:1 (60').

Konrad Abeltshauser: "The passes were a bit inaccurate today and we were often that famous half a second too late in tackles. It wasn't a really bad performance from us, but the bottom line is that it wasn't enough. The defeat doesn't upset us, but it's still annoying because the teams in the top third of the table are scoring well."
