Match Summary
Both teams started the game at a fast pace. Just 20 seconds in, Alberts Smits tested Adler goalie Maximilian Franzreb, before Antoine Bibeau was called into action for the first time at the other end. Despite several good chances, no goals were scored until the eighth minute. Then Brooks had a moment of brilliance: the Canadian put the Red Bulls ahead with a well-placed shot into the far top corner. Mannheim, however, responded strongly. During a period of sustained pressure, Kristian Reichel tapped in the rebound after Justin Schütz hit the crossbar to tie the game at 1-1 (13th minute). The guests played with more determination afterward, but Munich also had their chances—the score remained unchanged until the first intermission.
The Red Bulls were initially dominant after the break, but Mannheim defended with great determination and blocked many shots. Franzreb rarely had to make a save. Bibeau also had significantly less to do than in the first period, until the Eagles increased the pressure in the minutes leading up to the second intermission. However, a penalty took the wind out of their sails. The four-time German champions capitalized on the ensuing power play: Ehliz deflected a pass from Brooks in the slot (38th minute) and gave Munich a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Mannheim got off to the better start in the final period and immediately created two dangerous chances in front of Bibeau. But the Munich goaltender prevented the equalizer with strong saves. A power play then gave the Red Bulls some breathing room—even if no goal was scored. Instead, Hager scored a straightforward goal shortly after the penalty ended to make it 3-1 (46th). Just 46 seconds later, Eisenschmid capped off a solo effort with the 4-1 goal (46th minute), completing Munich’s two-goal surge. Coach David’s team now played with great enthusiasm and created several top-notch scoring chances in the ensuing minutes—including a shot off the crossbar by Eisenschmid (48th minute). When visiting coach Dallas Eakins pulled the goalie during a power play five minutes before the end of the period, Abeltshauser scored an empty-net goal to make it 5-1 (56th).
