Course of the game
From the first face-off, the fans were treated to a fast-paced, duel-oriented derby in which there was initially a lack of clear scoring chances. After the power break, the Red Bulls became more forceful. Maximilian Daubner and Murphy (both 11th) had promising shots, but AEV goalkeeper Michael Garteig prevented Munich from taking the lead. The Augsburg goalkeeper was also unable to get the better of him during a further period of pressure in the final phase of the third. The teams went into the first break at 0-0.
After the break, the duel was initially more even. The Panthers now also created good opportunities, but Antoine Bibeau in the Red Bulls' goal showed no weaknesses. In addition, Fabrizio Pilu narrowly missed giving Augsburg the lead (26'). At the other end, Eisenschmid took more accurate aim: on his comeback, the striker scored with a direct shot to make it 1:0 (28') after a remarkable assist from Murphy. Munich then took more and more control and added to their lead through Ferguson, who made it 2:0 (34'). However, Augsburg's T. J. Trevelyan reduced the deficit to 2:1 a little later (37'), creating tension before the final period.
Augsburg invested more in offense in the final period, but the Red Bulls defended attentively and consistently. For a long time, the visitors did not get any clear shots. The duel then picked up again in the final phase: First Konrad Abeltshauser narrowly missed making it 3:1 (55'), before Anthony Louis equalized on the counter-attack after a rebound off the boards (56'). Both teams then looked to decide the game in regulation time, but no further goal was scored before the siren.
Both teams played a controlled game in extra time, but there were still chances - and Murphy made the most of one in the 55th minute: the defender scored after a pass from Taro Hirose to make it 3:2 and secure the extra point for the four-time German champions.
