DEL Preview, Matchday 11: Red Bull München Hosts the Iserlohn Roosters
Our Form
The Red Bulls once again showed two different sides last weekend. A strong performance, including an away win against the defending champions, the Eisbären Berlin, was followed by a loss to the Nuremberg Ice Tigers—due to our own shortcomings. “It’s clear that we weren’t happy with our performance and the result in Nuremberg. We made too many individual mistakes. That can’t happen to us. That’s not our standard,” Maxi Kastner made clear.
This had also been a major focus during practice this week. “We addressed certain issues and reviewed video footage—and we’ve learned from it. We’re not looking back anymore; we’re looking ahead. We’re ready for this coming weekend,” emphasized our number 93.

// Highlights
We’re hoping to take another step forward in the standings this game. With 18 points, we’re in fifth place, just two points behind the second-place Straubing Tigers. The league-leading Eisbären Berlin are five points ahead. In general, all teams in the Penny DEL are still bunched closely together after just ten—or in some cases, eleven—games.
The Opponent
The Iserlohn Roosters, however, need to be a bit careful. The team at the bottom of the standings (nine points) desperately needs wins to prevent the gap to the top teams from widening too much too early. But: The team from the Sauerland region is on an upward trend.
After a rocky start to the season with four straight losses, Iserlohn has won three of its last five games. Among other results, they secured a 4–2 victory over the Kölner Haie. However, they also suffered a stinging 4–11 defeat in Straubing. In any case, things aren’t going well at all on the road. In five games, Coach Stefan Nyman’s team hasn’t earned a single point (7-27 goal differential)—partly due to their weak penalty-killing (a 67.65 percent success rate overall; no team is more vulnerable).
Former Munich defenseman Emil Johansson, who moved to Seilersee from Dresden, has so far been just as unable to stabilize the Roosters’ defense as Mac Hollowell. The newly signed Canadian (most recently with CSKA Moscow), whose strengths lie primarily in the offensive game anyway, brought strong credentials and a wealth of experience from the KHL and AHL.
Iserlohn has also made some notable additions to its offense. In Justin Scott (Straubing) and Cole Maier (Nuremberg), the team signed two center forwards who have already proven their quality in the PENNY DEL over the years. The most notable new addition so far, however, is Peter Quenneville. The winger returned to Germany from Finland (Ilves Tampere) and is considered a true goal-scorer. In the 2021–22 season, the Canadian played for the Lausitzer Füchse and, with 34 goals and 85 points, was the leading goal-scorer and top scorer in the entire DEL2.

Quenneville now leads the Roosters' internal scoring list alongside Julian Napravnik (both with eight points).
The Matchup
“We want to be much more compact, put even more pressure on the opponent, and move the puck forward faster,” said Kastner, outlining Munich’s game plan for Friday night.
That’s how we plan to get the Roosters’ likely compact defensive block moving, stretch it out, and force them into mistakes. We’ll then need to capitalize on the resulting scoring chances more effectively than we have recently. At the same time, as always against teams at the bottom of the standings, we can’t allow any counterattacks. After all, we want—and must—keep those three points right here in Munich.
Kastner also knows: “These are games we have to win. If we drop points here, it could hurt us in the standings at the end of the season. We want to come away with a six-point weekend.”
Player in the Spotlight
Our all-time leader in games played (currently 597 DEL games for the Red Bulls) is expected to break the 600-game mark later this month—though in a different role than in previous years. That’s because the regular forward, who already played some games as a defenseman in last season’s playoffs, was completely converted to a defenseman at the start of this season.

“Of course, it was a big adjustment,” he admits. “But I’m happy with the role, I feel comfortable, and I’ve settled in well,” he says, summing up his experience after ten games. “Every now and then, my forward instincts still come out. But in our system, it’s often the case anyway that defenders help out up front,” he explains.
So far, Kasti has been playing defense alongside Ville Pokka—and on Friday in Iserlohn, our Finnish player will face Joonas Nättinen, a former teammate on the Finnish national team. Both won the Olympic gold medal in Beijing in 2022. The experienced forward (most recently captain of Ilves Tampere) has only been playing for the Roosters for two games. The 35-year-old is expected to bring his leadership skills to Iserlohn and make his presence felt on offense once again.
Facts and Figures
In the last round, we won three out of four games against the Roosters. Jeremy McKenna, in particular, had a field day. Our forward scored a total of five goals and notched a hat trick in the 6-0 victory on January 11.
So far, Munich has won 43 of 65 head-to-head matchups (228–168 goals). However, with the exception of the aforementioned blowout victory at the start of the year, the last ten matchups have ended with a margin of no more than two goals.
Match Day Info
Mystery tickets for our home game against Iserlohn are no longer available. In general, only a few remaining tickets are currently available for the game. In addition, a new, centrally located deposit refund station is now available in Block 16. It is staffed from when the stadium opens until 30 minutes after the event ends and allows you to return reusable cups and tableware. Deposits can still be refunded at all kiosks—including the mobile order windows.
The match will be broadcast on MagentaSport, and of course, we’ll be covering it as usual in the live blog on our website and in the app.
