Monday, 15. September 2025 | The figures for EHC Red Bull München league opener
Emotional rollercoaster: The figures from the start of the league season// DEL - CURRENTWe kicked off the PENNY DEL season with a win and a loss. The 4-2 win against the Kölner Haie was followed by an unfortunate 3-4 loss against Bremerhaven in our first home game at the SAP Garden. Here are the facts and figures from our DEL season opener. Our fans got a surprise one day before the opening face-off in Cologne when we introduced Ville Pokka as a new signing. The Finnish world champion and Olympic gold medalist was promptly included in the line-up for our first game of the season and played a decisive role in quickly calming things down in the LANXESS arena.
Pokka scored the first goal from the blue line, with Philipp Krening deflecting the puck. The defender then set up the second goal with a perfectly timed pass to Gabriel Fontaine. With a focused performance, we held on to our lead and won the game 4-2.

Fontaine in scoring mood
Pokka, with two assists, and goal scorers Fontaine and Krening were representative of the new signings who made their mark in the very first game of the season. Less than 48 hours later, 9,542 fans flocked to the SAP Garden for our home opener against the Pinguins Bremerhaven (3-4).
They saw a Munich team that dominated the game for over 40 minutes – and another strong performance from Fontaine. The Canadian was involved in all three Munich goals (1 goal, 2 assists). This brings the forward's tally to five points after two match days – only Wolfsburg's Matt Choupani has been more successful in the league (6).
Taro Hirose's goal to make it 2:0 was also the 1500th DEL home goal in our club's history.

Bitter evening against Bremerhaven
After two periods, we were leading 2-1, before conceding the equalizer at the start of the final period after a bizarre situation. The DEL has since announced in a statement that the goal should not have counted. Bremerhaven then proved very efficient and turned the game around.
“We had some good moments, but we couldn't maintain the level we had in the first two periods in the final period. It was a bitter defeat, but we have to accept it. We will learn from it,” said coach Oliver David at the press conference.
Ice time distribution: Murphy with top value
Our coach relied on his entire squad over the weekend. All four lines received ice time. Ryan Murphy spent the most time on the ice (an average of 20:39 minutes per game).

The new defender was the only Munich player to break the 20-minute mark. In the DEL comparison, he was “only” ranked 24th. Of the forwards, Brady Ferguson (17:33 minutes per game) had the most playing time.
Special teams with room for improvement
The opening weekend brought many positive insights. The special teams, on the other hand, did not run so smoothly: on the first DEL weekend, we took advantage of one out of nine power play situations (rate: 11 percent).
Our guys proved during the preseason that they can do better. We also have room for improvement when shorthanded (78 percent).

Anticipation for the derby
On Friday (7:30 p.m.), the Red Bulls are looking to secure their first derby win of the season against the Augsburger Panther. Our coach is counting on strong support from the stands again – just like in his first game at SAP Garden: "We have a great arena – one of the best in Europe. The fans in the north stand pushed us forward and gave us fantastic support. Together with them, we want to secure our first victories in our stadium."
