Family man Brady Ferguson: The pro from the shopping mall“Who are you?” - the new portrait series of the Red Bulls// PORTRAIT In the latest installment of our series “Who are you?”, we introduce you to forward Brady Ferguson – a late bloomer from Texas with a sense of family, dry humor, and his heart in the right place.Ferguson was born in Lewisville, Texas, in 1994 – a state better known for oil, cowboys, and high temperatures than for ice hockey. “There wasn't really much interest in ice hockey there,” says Ferguson. In his early childhood, the family also spent time in California before moving back to Texas. “That was when the movie Mighty Ducks came out – I was five and we lived next to a shopping mall with an ice rink. It wasn't as hot there as it was outside. And that's where my mom taught me to skate,” Ferguson recalls.
The late bloomer from the Lone Star State
Thus began a career that was anything but typical. “I was a late bloomer. At 16 or 17, I became one of the better players in the Dallas area,” he says today. “But I didn't think about professional hockey for a long time.” In an environment dominated by sports such as football and basketball, it took perseverance – and the right people by his side.
Formative figures
Among them were coaches Dennis Williams and Harry Mahood. “Dennis Williams was probably my most important coach so far. I was a boy from Texas and didn't really know what it took to become a professional. He and Harry Mahood opened my eyes. They could be tough, but I liked that. It just fit.”

Important values and the golden rule
But it was his parents who had the most formative influence on him. They instilled values in him that he still lives by today: “Treat others as you would like to be treated – and hard work beats talent. Those two phrases have stuck with me.” He also fondly remembers family moments from his childhood: “I'll never forget the vacations with my parents and my brother,” says Ferguson, who asked for a hockey stick every Christmas.
Family first
The 30-year-old has long since started his own family. When Ferguson is with his wife Jacey and their sons Benny (ten months) and Barry (four years), he doesn't collect trophies, but moments. “The best moments for me are when I come home and my boys run up to me,” he says.
The family also enjoys traveling—as they did recently on a camping vacation together in Austria. “That's quality of life for me.” And the Ferguson family has already found its first favorite places in the Bavarian capital: playgrounds along the Isar River, beer gardens, and beautiful parks. “They're really incredible. We're really enjoying our time here,” says Ferguson. “But at the moment, we still feel a bit like tourists who want to discover everything.”
Coffee and cinnamon rolls
Ferguson is interested. During his time in Sweden with Rögle BK, he also tried to soak up Swedish culture. What particularly stuck with him was “fika,” a traditional coffee break. “I probably had a few too many coffees and cinnamon rolls. But it helped me understand the culture,” Ferguson says with a laugh. Now he is excited to see what Bavarian traditions await him.

A likeable guy with attitude
Anyone who talks to Ferguson quickly realizes that the Texan is not only down-to-earth, but also extremely likeable. He is approachable and open. In short, he makes it easy to like him. This makes him a player who is respected in the locker room. That's why he was one of the assistant captains at Rögle.
Ferguson has the title the Red Bulls want
His greatest success as a hockey player? With Rögle, the center celebrated winning the Champions Hockey League in 2022. “That was something special,” he says. “But I also won titles in college. It's hard for me to pick out the most important title.” Given his history, it seems as if the leap into professional ice hockey is his real triumph. Ferguson sums it up himself: “I just want to play ice hockey.”
Even before his move to Munich, he had his eye on the Bavarian capital. Four years ago, he visited the Red Bulls with Rögle in the Champions League – a visit that left an impression off the ice and positively influenced his decision to make the move.
As many victories as possible
Brady Ferguson is neither a loudmouth nor a showman. He is not someone who pushes himself into the spotlight. Nevertheless, he has a positive aura about him. He knows when he has to deliver – both as a family man and as a professional.
He has set himself ambitious goals for his first season with the Red Bulls: “I don't pay much attention to statistics – it's more important to improve over the course of the season. I know I have to perform well to help the team, because we want to win as many games as possible.”
