A role model and leader in every situation: This is Fabio Wagner“Who are you?” - the new portrait series of the Red Bulls// PORTRAITIn the second part of our series “Who are you?”, we introduce Fabio Wagner. Our new defender wants to lead the way at the Red Bulls. Off the ice, he is a quiet guy and a loving family man.Wagner's path to ice hockey was predestined. His father Bernd was a professional player himself, defending for EV Landshut and the German national team. Fabio's older brother Raphael also played ice hockey. “It quickly became clear where I was headed,” says the 29-year-old. He also started his career at EVL, the flagship team of his hometown. Later, he moved to ERC Ingolstadt, where he developed into a key player and captain over the years.
A highlight for eternity
Wagner celebrated his greatest success to date in the national team jersey by winning the silver medal at the 2023 World Championships. He also finished runner-up twice with ERC Ingolstadt – most recently in 2023, when the Red Bulls snatched the trophy from under his nose in the final. Now he is switching sides.
Family idyll on the outskirts of the city
Wagner sees Munich as the perfect place to finally win his first professional title. “I'm looking forward to the stadium, the fans, the team – and, of course, the city,” says the 29-year-old, who has moved to the outskirts of the city with his wife and two-year-old daughter. It's quieter there than in the center.
Episode 2 - „Wer bist denn du?“ mit Fabio Wagner
// PORTRÄT
“We like the countryside, we have a garden, but we can still get to the city quickly.” The young family likes their new surroundings. Has becoming a father changed him? “You'd have to ask my wife. I don't think so, but my priorities have shifted a little,” says Wagner. Without a child, he would “probably go to the golf course more often.”
Team success comes first
Wagner takes responsibility not only in his family, but also on the ice. In Ingolstadt, he wore the “C” on his chest. “I always wanted to lead by example. Team success was my top priority.” He was never the loudest, but he was someone who took responsibility – on and off the ice. "As a young player, I was fortunate to be influenced by strong leaders. I learned a lot from them."
He wants to bring his experience to the Red Bulls. He has already settled in well in the locker room. “The guys have welcomed me with open arms, and I know some of them from the national team.” In terms of his playing style, Wagner sees himself as a physical but fair defenseman: “I want to check, but play clean.”

New chapter, new number
Wagner is starting his new chapter in Munich with a big change: for years, he wore the number 5 on his jersey – in Munich, he will now wear the number 55, even though the number 5 would have been available. It was a conscious decision: “The number 55 was my first professional jersey number in Landshut – and Munich represents a new chapter in my sporting career.” The change of jersey number – a symbolic act.
What remains the same? The drive to improve and move forward. And a clear goal: “I want to win titles with the Red Bulls – and confirm my performance from previous years.” Fabio Wagner has a plan.
