Wagner on being knocked out of the World Championship: “We lacked consistency”// NATIONAL TEAMFor the first time since 2018, the DEB team has failed to reach the World Championship quarter-finals this year. Our new defender Fabio Wagner, who played in all seven preliminary round games, was understandably disappointed after Tuesday's elimination. After a narrow 1-2 defeat on penalties against hosts Denmark, the German team had to make their way home via Herning and Copenhagen on Wednesday morning. “It's obviously tough to lose on penalties,” said Wagner shortly after arriving at Munich Airport.
“The Danes got off to a better start, but then we got better and better. Unfortunately, we couldn't hold on to the 1-0 lead,” summarized the new Munich player. NHL star Nikolaj Ehlers (Winnipeg Jets) equalized in the 50th minute to make it 1-1, marking the turning point in the decisive group game.
Six Red Bulls at the World Championship
Wagner himself played a strong tournament and was one of the German team's strongest defenders. Unfortunately, even he couldn't prevent the early exit. “I think we simply lacked consistency against the top teams. We rarely managed to play our game for the full 60 minutes,” explained the 29-year-old. ”It was still fun, even though we didn't achieve our goal.”

In addition to Wagner, four other current Red Bulls pros were in the squad: goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger and forwards Patrick Hager, Maxi Kastner, and Yasin Ehliz. Incidentally, Kastner was Munich's most successful points scorer with three points (one goal, two assists). Our new assistant coach Rob Leask was also one of the assistants to national coach Harold Kreis.
Looking forward to the new season
The Munich sextet around Wagner are now taking a well-deserved summer break. Regeneration and switching off from ice hockey will be the main focus over the next few weeks. “And then I'll be preparing for the new season in Munich together with the training group. I'm really looking forward to getting started again,” revealed our new summer signing.
The first game of the 2025/26 season will be played on August 14. As part of the Lehner Cup, we will face SC Bern in Sursee, Switzerland, at 7:00 p.m.
